D&D 5E What is your definition of a Vanilla setting

A very well-point, but I respectfully disagree. Mr. Ice was already playing the latest edition, decades before its, as evidenced by his "Rollin' in my 5.0. With my rag-top down so my hair can blow.". "Slice like a ninja, cut like a razor blade" obviously refers to the time-honored vorpal...

    Obviously, this guy's homebrew setting.

    Fishing for Dragons

That's simply wrong. With salmon (or pretty much every other fish), cooking (with a bit of careful seasoning) is pretty much everything. If you overcook it, your salmon is going to taste horrible. That's why I stopped to bother and started cooking all salmon fillets sous-vide.

    D&D 5E Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

I'm not sure that it would be necessary to tinker with levels. The PCs in my D&D5e S&S campaign have reached level 11th and, thanks to bonded accuracy, are far from invincible. For instance, they still have at least one weak saving throw. Of course, I don't necessarily go easy on them. I'm...

    D&D 5E Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

S&S main characters all lean on competent side, regardless of Conan. Red Sonja, Jirel of Joiry and Kull all feel competent, so do Fhard and the Gray Mouser. From my experience, people who want to play a S&S game want to play characters such as those I mentioned, not some run-of-the-mill guard...

    D&D 5E Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

Some divination and abjuration magic could work. We can look for inspiration in dubious movies such as The Warrior and The Sorceress, Conan the destroyer or in books such as Bradley's Sword and Sorceress anthology.

An alternative would be to have a category of spells which are less risky but less powerful (some sort of white magic, for instance) and have a category of spells which are more risky but more powerful (typical black magic). So, in that case, the player get to choose between a sword, a bic...

    D&D 5E Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

Funnnily enough, the first thing I did when deciding on house rules for my D&D 5e Sword and sorcery game was banning the warlock. Conceptually, the warlock fits S&S like a glove, but its implementation in D&D 5e seemed to me incompatible with the genre. Sorcery in the S&S genre is powerful...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

After a few months playing Fengh Shui and The Expense, we returned to our sword-and-sorcery-ish D&D game. The characters went back to the City-state of the Invincible Overlord and pour throught the Treaty on Things of the East, an old tome written in Elvish about the mysterious tripod vase that...

D&D 5E Odd things in the rules that bug you?

Please note that my comment was about how long people work and not how much they work. There is a difference. My wife has a master degree in History while one of my best friend has a degree in History. They both arrived to the same conclusion: medieval workers work much harder than we did (or...

D&D 5E Odd things in the rules that bug you?

It makes a lot of sense in a medieval context. People were dependent on the sun for their activities and enjoyed large breaks during the days. Also, they had much more holidays then we do. In fact, people in the medieval era work much less than we do.

D&D General Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

Well it did happen here. New France did send several Frenchmen to live with Natives Tribes with hopes they would learn their language and customs and act as middlemen for the fur trades and peace agreement. Unfortunately for the colonial government, most of them decided not to come back.

D&D 5E How weak is Athlete Feat?

I don't know. One PC in my game as the Athlete Feat and did use a lot. Of course, our game feature a lot of terrain, hence much climbing is involved. The feat is obviously not as powerful as Sharpshooter, but I don't see it underpowered.

D&D General PCs raiding a city

Because of the pandemic, we use Roll20. From my perspective, I don't think we'll play the old-fashioned way until 2021.

D&D General PCs raiding a city

I was thinking more about a raid. The not-vikings do not want to occupy or conquer the city. They want to sack it, not so much for the riches they will plunder (but it's a nice bonus) but more to assert their independance over elves. As I wrote earlier, the elves see the not-viking holdings as...

D&D General PCs raiding a city

Exactly as Redwizard007 said, my original plan was that he doesn't believe the the giants will serve him, but more likely that the giants will accept the non-vikings as henchmen. Of course, the giants care not about such a thing. It's a classic case of some mortal messing with forces he...

D&D General PCs raiding a city

Initially, the not-vikings would indeed believe the giants are on their side, but would soon find out that the giants aren't really on anybody side. Here's a bit of background context on giants in my campaign: Giants are the twisted descendants of the Progenitors, a mysterious star-faring...

D&D General PCs raiding a city

Indeed, I want something more than a string of combats and the battle isn't between Good and Evil. Just like in history, both factions sincerely believe they are the good guys. I was thinking about a few totally not-vikings putting a house on fire, while some people are inside. It might be the...
