I would expect this to happen after a page or two, but in the first page and a tangent that is not even brought up in the OP? I mean the OP doesn’t mention anything about combat, or difficulty, or how tough the NPC is. It isn’t a tangent so much as a fabrication.

Spells are magic, but not all magic is spells. Being able to counter spell something is dependent, in my fiction, on understanding what I am counterspelling. I understand spells, because I am a spellcaster, but I don’t have a grasp of all magic

If it breaks your fiction, then remove it. It doesn’t for all of us. Fiction is subjective after all.

As @cbwjm said, in 5e willpower is broken up between all of the “mental” stats: Int, Wis, & Cha.

Yikes, I would hate that. Combat is one of the most entertaining parts in our game. I would hate if it was just one roll and done. Everyone gets more animated and excited during combat and the role playing is more engaged. The longer the better IMO.

Other than a few bad apples I don’t really feel like it is bashed in these forums.

Except in most editions you don’t die at 0 hp. Usually there is something else that must happen before you die.

The guidelines are largely accurate. Though they did run into a problem with dragons. Dragons are actually low in their CR. I think this was on purpose (like fireball), but I think they have decided not to follow that trend. The great wyrm dragons in Fizbans have a CR of 26-28 ( greater than...

You can’t go by the art. Think about a dragon the fits in a 20’ square. But as I said, I agree with the 4d10 for the bite.
