What are your five post-apocalyptic RPG books?

GURPS 4th Edition Basic Set Edge of the Empire Hmm... after that, I'm not really sure. I might use the other slots for supplements. With those two, I can cover most things I would want. Funny enough, some of the GURPS books may be valuable for survival info. Beyond that, anything else is gravy

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

Sidenote: GURPS (at least the edition I'm most familiar with) does address how this might/should work. Funny enough, the margin of success rules from GURPS 4E influenced how I ran D&D 4E skill challenges. D&D 4E also influenced how I did some things while running GURPS. I liked a lot of D&D...

Worlds of Design: Peaceful Solutions to Violent Problems

Anecdotally, I've found that games which focus on linear (1-20 levels or N items followed by N+1 items) encourage violent solutions as the primary way to resolve conflict. The built-in assumptions are that stacking more numbers produces a better outcome than being clever or diplomatic. The...

    What's your favorite dice system?

Depends I would posit that D&D's structure (even with "bounded accuracy" and the d20) encourages minmaxing more because "+N" is a primary method of advancement. In a game where width/breadth of play (and advancement) is encouraged, you certainly can minmax one area (like you've said,) but that...

What did you study in college?

My listed majors were "Communications/PR" and "Mediation." I took a lot of unrelated electives though. I went to college later in life (in my 30s). I had the life experience and job proficiency already, but needed some piece of paper to be hired for much in the US. I enjoyed college, but I...

D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

I don't see that as necessary. There are reasons for why it has been standard practice to arrange books in a commonly understood way. A short summary blurb and bullet points would more accurately give an idea about an adventure than color coding. I get the idea of the color coding, but that...

D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

🤷‍♂️ Isn't the idea behind boxed text, introductions, and various other "normal" parts of a book to do exactly what he's suggesting with the color coding?
