    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I think there’s one clear example of subjective in the quality discussion. What categorizations does one use. McDonald’s to me is clearly lower quality that a 5 star restaurant though I may enjoy McDonald’s more (not big on super fancy restaurants). But if we can’t even place them in the same...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Sounds reasonable. Is there any product you would say is poor quality despite popularity/good sales?

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

The definition you cite for recession is one solely built upon hindsight. The market didn’t actually drop more than 20% from its Nov 2007 max until Nov 2008. Actual news that a recession was occurring (not potentially going to occur) didn’t happen until last quarter of 2008.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Sounds like arm chair quarterbacking. Virtually No one in 2007 was contemplating anything as bad as what happened in 2008. It’s easy to say it began in 2007 when looking in the rear view mirror. But at the time that certainly wasn’t clear it would happen and even if something did happen it...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Might be related to the reason that most people don’t like being told they made a poor or low quality choice.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Maybe. Maybe the same is true of RPGs as well. Can we at least say that same books, some cars, some RPGs, etc are of lesser quality than other ‘categorically similar’ ones? Can we agree that popularity is not a great guide to determining the quality of categorically similar products?

If 5e stops being popular does that make it bad Quality?

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Your argument here presumes that intrinsic quality is the driving force in a competitive market. It’s not. Lower quality products win out all the time. Price point, marketing, branding, fear of missing out, keeping up with the Jones’s, wanting to play with friends, ease of finding campaigns...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Fully agree, but I do think the basic product needs to meet some minimum quality threshold or external factors like brand name recognition aren’t enough to maintain popularity. Not saying that minimal level would be considered ‘good quality’. Maybe it’s ‘not terrible quality’.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I’d be more willing to entertain the idea that popularity implies some minimal threshold of quality.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I think that’s a good point. Whether something is ‘quality’ depends on what qualities of it you are measuring. For a car it might be speed, reliability, exterior look, etc. Or for a car it might be price, expected miles, cost of repairs over lifetime, safety options. In short both cars...

A Ferrari and a Kia are both automobiles. A frying pan is not a drinking glass.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Is a Ferrari or a Kia a more quality automobile? I see a lot more Kia’s around than Ferrari’s. Does that mean Kia is better quality than Ferrari?
