    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I don’t think you can speak to quality without comparison. When I compare 5e to other games, I don’t know if there’s any component of it that I’d say it is best at. I’d say that says something about the quality of the game. I don’t think 5e is low quality, really. It’s just not high...

The TOO MUCH SETTING issue (SPIRE reviewed by SU&SD)

Some great posts in this thread. I’ve been busy this week so I’ve not had a lot of time to post. I finally managed to watch the video, and clearly it’s a positive review of Spire (and Heart, too). To address the criticism Quinns brought up, and which has been echoed here, I think there’s...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

What games beside D&D 5e would you classify as quality games? I don’t think it’s about the popularity of your opinion so much as about how little you’ve said about anything. You think D&D is a quality game because lots of people have purchased it. If someone asked you why you like 5e, I hope...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Right but I think I kind of addressed that in the rest of my post.

D&D General How "Real" is your world?

    I wasn’t talking about PCs.

The TOO MUCH SETTING issue (SPIRE reviewed by SU&SD)

I’ll have to watch the video when I have a chance. I like Quinns as a reviewer, bit as a massive fan of Spire, I don’t think he’s being very fair. While the book does have a ton of lore to draw upon, I don’t think the players or the GM needs to know more than the broad strokes. I certainly...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Sure, but being able to totally ignore something doesn’t speak to its quality. I’d say if modularity is a desirable element, then we have to look at both cases. With and without. Sure, Inspiration can be dropped with no impact on play. But including it… as I said, it stinks. It’s a half measure.

D&D General How "Real" is your world?

I focus on the characters. The more real they feel, the more real the world will feel.

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

The issue is that Inspiration stinks. Advantage on a roll for playing one’s character in some way consistent with their BIFTs is just meh. For anyone wanting robust mechanics in this area, it falls very short. For those that don’t want such mechanics, it does nothing. The issue isn’t with...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

Yeah, I think that’s the better way to evaluate quality. Examine the components first. Critique of specific elements of the game aren’t countered by comments about sales. Doing so is an attempt to dismiss criticism. Which is odd because I’d think most of us can easily rattle off some issues with...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I feel like the OP is evaluating D&D as a product and not as a game. Like, it sells well, so it’s a great product. Which, okay yeah, it sells well. Evaluating it this way sheds little light on how it performs as a game. As a game, and considering the significant resources of WotC, it’s hard...

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

Wow, a little blast from the past there. That thread was a big part of my understanding of games beyond those I was playing, and toward trying new ones out.

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

I agree with all of this. I’m not saying either game is better than the other or anything like that. Just that I think of the two I mentioned, one was more suited to character driven play. Here though, I disagree. Not about the extent of playtesting, because that’s certainly true, but about...

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

I think that when it comes to focusing on character, the games that actually involve elements of a character in the play processes tend to facilitate this a lot more than games that do not, or that do so poorly. I have in mind two recent games that I played in. I tend to GM most of the time...

This is the one I meant. The blue box.

What are your five post-apocalyptic RPG books?

I'm playing tonight! Probably session 22 or so. It's been one of my favorite campaigns I've ever run.

What are your five post-apocalyptic RPG books?

It's a great game! There's a quickstart that's pay what you want. Here's a link: Spire Quickstart Quickstarts aren't always the best, I know, but this one seems like a decent start. There are also three Campaign Frames (adventure module type products) that are also available as pay what you...

What are your five post-apocalyptic RPG books?

Spire: The City Must Fall Blades in the Dark Apocalypse World Marvel Super Heroes RPG (the TSR one) Some kind of D&Dish game- not sure exactly which one, though. I feel it’s a nice spread of games, covering a good amount of genres. Sci-fi is the obvious one that’s missing, but I feel like I...

    Die RPG Kickstarter

Die RPG Kickstarter This went live today, and has already funded! It’s based on the comic book by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, which I’d recommend to anyone on this site. Just a great comic that involves so much RPG history and examines why we game and how it affects us. Kieron Gillen...

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

I know it’s been many pages, but I thought this post would be a potentially good discussion point. What do you think makes these games different? We can talk about the obvious things like genre and mechanical rules differences and the like, but I expect it’d be more interesting to look at them...
