Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

Exhaustion is a brutal mechanic - but in 5e, which generally lacks such, it's sometimes welcome to have a brutal mechanic. I actually like the mechanic under many circumstances. Frenzy imposing such a brutal mechanic and being, as far as I'm aware, the only class ability to impose this kind of...

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

But even here, there IS a solution, if not an ideal one. Assuming no disabilities, or completely new players, you can impose a hard time limit - 30 seconds seems pretty standard. If they don't get to their action in time, they take the dodge action. Perhaps it's harsh, and I wouldn't do it...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

Well, yes, section 31 are essentially the sin eaters of the federation. But, my point is, however it got there, the Federation shouldn't need a dark side anymore. It IS a radical concept, but the point is to have a society that really has risen above it. Not one that never makes mistakes etc...

    Orville: New Horizons (Spoilers)

Brannan Braga has strengths as a writer, subtlety is NOT one of them!

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

And yet, Starfleet goes to war ALL the time. One of the running themes seems to be that protest as they do, Starfleet and the Terran empire aren't as different as all that: It's one reason I hate the section 31 story lines. As much as they're technically portrayed as villains the writers...

Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

It isn't just about "protecting the newbies." One of the central features of the class is just terrible. It's presented as this big benefit when it isn't even that big and the downside is REALLY significant. That's worth noting!

Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

Sure, but as it stands, It's a VERY difficult condition to remove. Magically speaking you can recover from being dead (revivify) much easier than from exhaustion (greater restoration). And exhaustion adds up FAST. One level is ok (but still annoying and may well cripple a grappler build) any...

Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

I agree, in general. Though I still don't understand how the designers didn't catch that they were putting in a massive trap for new players with frenzied rage. Having frenzy impose exhaustion is bad. Exhaustion is one of the nastiest and most difficult to get rid of conditions in 5e. To have...

Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

I'm ok playing it, but I world never willingly run 3.5 again, certainly not at anything approaching high level. Running 3.5 at high levels was an epic chore. Even WITH every short cut I could take it was WAY too much effort.

The Cavalier subclass comes close to a 4e fighter, at least with the marking mechanic. Throw in a few maneuvers and your almost there. The hexblade warlock or bladesinger comes pretty close to a swordmage with a little refluffing.

But what if the other people at the table DON'T like 3.5 or 4e? A few of the people at my table like 3.5 but dislike 4e. Two others like 4e but dislike 3.5 All of them are fine with 5e, so when we play D&D that's what we play.

Well... I wouldn't want to be accused of being a powergaming min-maxer!

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to test out the Harengon fighter (ambush maneuver)/bard/gloomstalker/wizard (warmage) with the alert feat and a weapon of warning!

Yes, more options are generally good. Indomitable should be reworded "Beginning at 9th level, if you fail a saving throw you can choose to succeed instead. You can't use this ability again until you have finished a long rest." IOW 1 use of legendary resistance. I quite like 2nd wind, It's a...

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

Lots of good ideas so far. One thing to keep in mind is a group of friends is quite different than a convention game or an AL game or even a game that meets but are acquaintances. What's worked for my group (and I have 1 clear slow player, if I let him he would take an hour to decide on any...

Review A critique and review of the Fighter class

Edit: Huh, no upcasting for larger amount of targets, could swear that was in there. But they can still cast Haste for the benefit of the party. But the POINT was, in 5e wizards have to pick their effects, most of the big stuff can't be stacked because it's concentration.

Yeah, an "out of combat" action surge mechanic and maybe a separate maneuver die pool for outside of combat - would go a long, long way!

But at least Wizards now face choices, they can't Haste the party AND slow (also, slow has a save it's "better" if it hits but not as reliable as haste) the baddies AND banish the big bad etc. And frankly, as levels increase, buffing (for the wizard) becomes a VERY good option - as more and...
