D&D General Best Adventure Path (spanning 10+ levels) of all time?

The Anniv Editions of both RotRL and CotCC for PF1 are the definitive versions of each to get. They are available in softcover and in PDF from from the Paizo store, (though I think they are out of the hardcover, at least mint versions of same.) You can find the hardcover out in the wild...

D&D General Best Adventure Path (spanning 10+ levels) of all time?

Agreed. I re-wrote the ending when I ran it, but that was principally because it had been out for nearly 10 years at that point and I wanted to surprise the players. (I also don't like irredeemable BBEGs who are set down the road to evil by an enchantment). But yeah, final two battles are a...

D&D General Best Adventure Path (spanning 10+ levels) of all time?

Ch. 5 in the Anniv Ed is about ~20% longer than the original Vol 5 for 3.5 was. The original map was so large, parts of it were undetailed. The Anniv Ed aimed to fix that - that was James Jacobs main mission in the Anniv Ed in terms of editorial changes. Ch. 5 takes 25-30 hours to play, as...

D&D General Best Adventure Path (spanning 10+ levels) of all time?

There is a difference between preferring low to mid-range play and eschewing high level (I certainly prefer low to mid-range, too and tend to avoid running high-level play if I can) and dissing portions of APs which are written for higher level (and are thus more challenging to write) but are...

D&D General Best Adventure Path (spanning 10+ levels) of all time?

The correct answer is Rise of the Runelords. Why? Because these people wrote it, while being guided by James Jacobs, who is the best architect/developer of adventures in the RPG business: James Jacobs, Richard Pett, Nicolas Logue, Wolfgang Baur, Stephen S. Greer, Greg A. Vaughan. You can maybe...

D&D General Hot Take: Uncertainty Makes D&D Better

There is nothing "hot" about this take. On display is the linear curve presented by the D20. Other games which use the D100 to resolve the outcome are on a similar linear curve. Contrast that to a game premised on multiple dice being added together to produce a result, often d6s but sometimes...

OGL It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

I'm still processing all of this. Not only are there some unknown facts still, FAR more importantly, there remain some unknown emotions, too. Namely, mine. I haven't made up my mind about any of this - and likely won't for quite a while. I will say this: I am still prepping a new campaign to...

OGL Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

https://scc-csc.lexum.com/scc-csc/scc-csc/en/item/7922/index.do Quantum meruit has been wholly subsumed by unjust enrichment since the early 90s. This case simply re-stated it and doubled-down on it for valuation purposes. As I have mentioned a few times, for a variety of reasons, the UK is...

OGL WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

No, it doesn't. It means you order your products printed in a volume sufficient to keep the price down - and low enough that you are confident you will sell them in the same fiscal year. It sounds like they likely sold through ~20,000 to 30,000 copies in 2 weeks. If you are WotC and seeing DDB...

OGL WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Also when it comes to metrics, the news yesterday that Paizo hold sold out of 8 months of Core Rulebook stock in 2 weeks was probably confirmed by distributors to WotC, too. I expect that sort of metric would not be ignored either. WotC has no desire to re-visit 2009. Customer churn is one...

OGL Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

Correct. And while we were busy disagreeing with Kit Walsh (who was initially largely of the same view as the OP), she did a 180 and reversed her position in her blog later that same day - and agreed with the majority view here. We've quibbled in the footnotes, but not in the main.

OGL Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

That is all it is in Canada. There is absolutely zero practical difference between the two in our courts. It's all unjust enrichment at this stage. Quantum meruit is still mentioned in our pleadings, but rarely in our judgments.

OGL WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Or effectively moved off of this aspect of things? Sure, that may well be it, too. Same metrics, viewed by somebody higher up who said "ENOUGH. Make your damned VTT and sell it on its own merits. Shutting out other web based stuff doesn't sound like a real competitor to what you've show us at...

OGL WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Honestly? No. I think that was just Wall Street driven layoffs, same as we have seen from many companies over the past 10-14days. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta/Facebook. No shortage of those whether the company's profits were up or down. I would not think that or the day-to-day share price...

OGL WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Perhaps. Just as likely (if not more so) that it was something else/instead, too. I expect there were other metrics and data points involved in an about face like this. And whatever it was, it was a complete 180, notwithstanding a dump of $146m into DDB and at least 8 -- and maybe 9 figures in...

    OGL Matt Colville weighs in.

Honestly, if they hadn't Eff'd this up with 1.1 and doubled down to show their true colors with 1.2? I'm the older grognard that TOTALLY would have gone for at least kicking these tires. High performance graphics VTT for a FRPG? Hells yes! I'm your guy. I would have huffed and puffed and done...

OGL PC Gamer: OGL not worth fighting for.

What he should have said (and might have if he was but a little older) was World of Warcraft is really popular - -imagine if it was the only game around? Then you would have had 2008, when WoW reigned supreme as the only PC game of any consequence whatsoever, and the PC Game Software Retail...

OGL PC Gamer: OGL not worth fighting for.

We can debate the pros and cons of PC Gamer's observations all we like. In the end, I think WotC has made up its mind and is non-persuadable on the OGL issue to make further meaningful concessions. We are getting a NEW open license, the form of which will be genericized for ORC, but which will...

OGL Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

This is called a personal services contract. There are often very good reasons for doing so and usually relate to tax advantages, but may otherwise form the basis of extending a General Security Agreement, or trying to create a stock option, etc.. The reasons for doing so are numerous and each...
