Throw me your best definition of "TTRPG"

Tables are required for playing some games. Some games, you play under the table. Well, these . . . you play on top!

TSR Best Way to Replicate AD&D?

Understandable. If I'm a new RPGer, and my first experience is D&D5, then it's fair to assume that any other game will be an equivalent pain in the butt to learn. Why do that, when I already know a game? Show them Microlite20. Maybe they'll appreciate an actual stripped-down version of D&D...

Some house rules for weapon breakage in RPGs ...

Sunder - such a weird concept when I start thinking about it. It seems reasonable to attempt to break someone's weapon when you think about it. "Enemy have weapon. If break weapon, enemy not have weapon." Then I realize that there's an important reason that most combatants don't decide to...

Ah, Cityscape, Heroes of Horror co-author. I thought that name sounded familiar. Hope it's the last of the wrongful accusations 😰

Some house rules for weapon breakage in RPGs ...

Erm, Imma take a stab at progressive weapon damage: Roll a 1, and you damage your weapon: degrade by one die type. Roll another 1, and you've broken your weapon. It still does d4 damage, but that's it. You can choose not to roll your weapon damage, but then it's only half effective. That...

Help me make the fighter tick the boxes

Agreed. Fighters should not have spell lists or power lists. They should use all the combat rules, and better than other characters.

    On completely artificial restrictions

What immerses someone in the fantasy of the game is probably going to vary by the person. One thing that works for me is spending less time worrying about rules when I'm in mortal combat, so, lighter games versus heavier. Enjoying the game and feeling like you're there are two different...

    RPGer's Retirement Planning (for laughs)

Good call. The trash can is more appropriate 🤓

    On completely artificial restrictions

I really think this phenomenon is due to 5e being the combat system, not embracing the gaminess of games. That's not to say that embracing gaminess has no value - it works wonders for Dungeon World, for example. +1 for using a different perspective. I'm with @John Dallman however - I wouldn't...

D&D Movie/TV Watch This Honor Among Thieves Clip (With a Cameo from the D&D Cartoon Adventurers!)

"Arena maze" doesn't do it justice. I'd call it "The Most Amazing Engineering Marvel Ever to Grace the Entire Planescape." The poor slave labor underneath, lifting the pillars, probably call it something worse. Telepathic transmission of images to spectators' brains. Or would you like to...

    OGRE (Oscillating Gyroscopic Resonator Engine)

This is pretty awesome, but there's something you don't know. There's a reason these devices appear across eras, genres, and/or games: they're time-traveling keys to a special dimension. And the power that owns them is one with which you don't want to trifle. So power those flying machines...

D&D Movie/TV The D&D Movie Reviews Are Coming In

It's not the combat. D&D's DNA is mostly combat. It's the style of combat. I'd much rather see Game of Thrones-style combat than Hulk-style combat. One could. But for some odd reason, I think Marvel is significantly older than D&D.

What's Your "Sweet Spot" for a Skill system?

At first, my thought is, "yes, this is exactly what the skills should be! Why waste paper?" But... unless the game forces a type of game play, doesn't "actually rolled" depend on the players? Or couldn't the GM be in charge of selecting what is actually rolled? (This latter even more so...

D&D Movie/TV The D&D Movie Reviews Are Coming In

My biggest concern now is the collection of Marvel-style beat-em-up scenes in the trailers. Those don't make Marvel movies good, and they won't make DADHAT good, but they do seem to sell movies well.

What's Your "Sweet Spot" for a Skill system?

In Modos 2, I encourage the guide (GM) to write her own skill list, and it's exactly for this reason. Some groups don't need 10 thief skills. Some do. The guide can keep it simple by throwing out the skill list, pruning down the 21 (22ish?) default skills, or keeping the default list. Or, she...

Solving the "Just Roleplay it..." problem...

Oh yes they can. They just wouldn't do it well. "I wouldn't get captured in the first place." "I'd break out." "I'd use the key." and my personal favorite: "I'd pray to Jeebus. So when I die in the cell, I'll be resurrected into an extra-planar paradise by a 9th-level casting aasimar."

Solving the "Just Roleplay it..." problem...

So, like offering a bonus die or power to a future roll for a PC using his own flaw against himself? That was my solution, anyway. Fate does this too with Compels, if I'm not mistaken. I don't think that you  need a separate system for mental encounters. Especially if the base game is...

    WotC WotC D&D Community Update

You keep using the word "compatible." Inigo doesn't think it means what WotC says it means. Especially after "update core rules."
