D&D General Kobold Press Going Down a Dark Road

I can think of at least one too, in fact of at least two ;) One of which should open up later this year and the other unfortunately never being opened based on some recent threads, despite me being much more interested in it that Planescape

Aren't most settings open by now? I am not expecting to see e.g. new 2e DragonLance content on DMsG, but there is new DL 5e content

it is not so much me pointing out an issue as an explanation for why the grognards are not that important to WotC

Since your biggest fears did not come true (I presume...), does this mean you can change the timeline back ? Because being at playtest 2 now and having a Kickstarter in June does feel rushed to me. That right now is my biggest concern with this project, it feels rushed to me

It's neither good nor bad, it simply is. What you make of it is up to you. You can decide that 1DD is not for you and play Shadowdark or Level Up or whatever else you want, you can stay with 5e or whichever edition you actually like best, or you can switch to 1DD. The 'problem' and the...

I agree that the people upset about the OGL thing are their best bet, but I am not seeing how what they wrote is relevant to that group. To me what is of more interest is their wide VTT support and the content / classes being available under a similar permissive license (ORC, and / or CC). This...

agreed, it's just that I do not encounter them anywhere but on this forum ;)

Having a grognard in a group is not a requirement for a group to form. When I started playing in the 1e days, I simply started a group and it was the first time for all of us. Pretty sure that is frequently the case. Even when it is not, it can be someone who has played the game for a few years...

If that second sentence is what you are saying, then I am not sure how it follows from the Kobold Press post. OGL is not mentioned anywhere, and what is mentioned does not have anything to do with that controversy

Not sure about the vital bit. Grognards to me have played the game a long time and do bring people into the game, but that game is by now OSR, not 5e, and it has not happened with 5e first either, they already did move away with 4e or even 3e. Some hung in there, some maybe came back for 5e, but...

Yes you are, never said otherwise. But you are one in a diverse group, not a representative of the entire group. So if WotC does something 80% like, 15% don't care and you find yourself in the 5% then they still act in the interest of that population, even if it is not in yours. No idea, I...

That is my take as well. One good thing in my book is that Black Flag will be on all kinds of VTTs, while for 1DD I am not so sure about the future support. Heck, it already supports fewer than BF will from the start (according to the announcement). Presumably it will also include more of the...

Don't equate yourself with that population. If you think WotC is not interested in keeping their audience and having it move to 1DD, and are instead creating 1DD for some new audience, then I have no idea what you are smoking. If they lose one grognard for every 10 new players they gain, it is...

Edition is meaningless when it is used mostly as a marketing term, as is done here, see 1e and 2e, 3e and 3.5. This time they try to not call it a new edition, last time they did, either way it is the same game it already was. I'd call it a revision, not an edition.

but they are pretty compatible, just like 1e and 2e. People treating things differently is not always based on reason

D&D General Kobold Press Going Down a Dark Road

Pretty much. D&D, AD&D and 2e were very compatible and modules were used interchangeably frequently. 2e is a cleaned up 1e, not something entirely new like 3e, 4e or 5e were. Calling it 2e was marketing, not an indication of significant differences.

I don't know, they are optional, but they do more than introduce new subclasses. "This chapter introduces the PLAYER'S OPTION combat system, an advanced set of skirmish rules designed to add detail and flavor to battles in an AD&D game. The combat rules from the Player's Handbook and DUNGEON...
