    D&D 5E Obelisks? [spoilers YES]

Or maybe he already did (see: rebooted Ravenloft, rebooted Spelljammer, etc...)

    D&D Meets Minecraft

FYI, the minecraft.net release is a PDF, though I had to dig a bit to find it: scroll to the bottom of https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/collectibles/minecraft-collection So those of you who like PDFs and/or don't want a D&D Beyond account, they've got your back.

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

Yep, that was another common criticism. They were equal-opportunity disappointers, apparently...

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

Kyle Brink's recent admission that Dark Sun would be too problematic to tackle now admittedly adds fuel to that fire.

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

His other significant failings aside, Mearls did seem to be better at pleasing a certain segment of veteran fans (those with an attachment to the game's history and lore).

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

For example, Eberron: Rising from the Last War seemed to do just fine, and that had hundreds of pages of lore that some players surely didn't care about. By contrast, one criticism of Spelljammer was its lacking approach to lore.

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

One advantage to Wizards (or any other publisher) doing the heavy lifting on lore is that DMs who want that kind of deep background can get a "home version of the Silmarillion" without having to put in all that extra effort. They can use it wholesale, or pick and choose and remix (which I...

Planescape 5 New D&D Books Coming in 2023 -- Including Planescape!

To be fair, they also stopped focusing on long-time fans with 4E's launch, when they reset the lore for the "Points of Light" approach. They just reversed course for 5E (especially noticeable in the earliest 5E products). Then reversed course again with products like Ravenloft, which went back...

Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Based on opinions I've seen here and elsewhere, I think there's probably more like 900 sides...

D&D General When is the last time you DMed a game?

Early 2020, just before the pandemic started. Attempted to organize a few games last summer to give closure to our 2014-2020 campaign, but failed; after that we officially ended the campaign and stopped trying. At this point, not sure when I'll DM again.

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

Right, they need the influencers to be more than just placated or even content, they need them to be actively enthusiastic about the new edition.

Bob the World Builder Interviews Kyle Brink

Considering their professed concerns about the integrity of the D&D brand, I'd be very surprised if they did this. It wouldn't really shield them from criticisms over any problematic elements in the derivative products, either, especially if those criticisms were rooted in elements from older...

    When were you introduced to

Assorted others mentioned after the OP: Stargate - Watched the original film when it was new and liked it, caught SG-1 in reruns and liked it more. Star Trek - Aware of it as far back as I can remember, helped by both parents being fans. Might have seen the third film in theaters, definitely...

    When were you introduced to

D&D - I'm pretty sure I was aware of the cartoon as a little kid, yet didn't actively watch it (mid-1980s). Picked up my first D&D books (Fiend Folio and 1E PHB) from a yard sale somewhat later (late 1980s), loved the Folio but largely ignored the PHB. Didn't play or actually become invested in...

So What's In Kobold Press' BLACK FLAG First Playtest?

I was just reflecting earlier on how the D&D Next playtests went. Not only did their packets have full character creation rules (if only up to certain levels, and only providing certain options), but they also included one or more adventures to run test games with. That makes playtesting much...

So What's In Kobold Press' BLACK FLAG First Playtest?

Most of this I like, but just as with One D&D, I have an instant aversion to ditching the largely RP-based background features and replacing them with level-1 power-ups (feats talents). Disappoints on a few levels. I'll ponder this a bit before giving feedback, though.

Ginny Di interviews WotC's Kyle Brink

Interesting - are they actually thinking about putting the 3.0 SRD under CC in addition to the 3.5 one? I figured we'd just get 3.5. (The d20 Modern SRD would also be awful nice, simply because it contributed to games like Mutants & Masterminds and True20.)

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

I just double checked, and at around 46:20 he does actually say they don't have any plans right now. He included a caveat, despite the rest of the quote above. Hmm.

D&D 5E Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes or Monsters of the Multiverse if I don't care about new PC races?

Lore-wise, you get more information in Tome of Foes, especially on the rulers of Hell. Statistics-wise, both have statblocks for the same creatures - both books have the Demon Princes and one ruler of Hell (Zariel). Both books also have the same set of unique devils, including Geryon.

D&D 5E Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes or Monsters of the Multiverse if I don't care about new PC races?

Depends on whether you value lore or not. If you do, Tome of Foes is the better choice, because over 100 pages of lore are missing from Multiverse, to include lore on demons and gith, in addition to core PC options. Plus the Multiverse versions of the Foes monsters are cut back lore-wise to...
