Approaches to prep in RPGing - GMs, players, and what play is *about*

So, let them change the setting? There seems to be the assumption that if the setting is made first, that makes immovable walls to corral the characters. I guess I see the process as: Worldbuilding / Setting => Characters => Situations => Changes to Setting => Character Growth => Next Situation

D&D 5E Did March of the Machine wreck D&D settings of Theros, Ravnica, and Strixhaven? Spoiler Alert.

I met the model for Serra Angel. Nice person, likes D&D, et al. Big into larping. Random item of the day.

    GaryCon '23?

I commiserate. GameStorm is practically in my backyard and I wasn't even able to make that this year.

D&D 5E Ruling Question on Shapechanger & Hold Person

I would rule that it would not work, and thus be a clue towards the creature's true identity. It being truly an aberration, the spell fails. It's just squished into a humanoid package.

Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

Wow, no, not at all. It's like you and Bloodtide are gazing at one another through a mirror. I'm still waiting on my copy of Burning Wheel to arrive via post. Hopefully more useful comments soon.

Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

Yeah, that runs afoul of the Baron's Third Rule- "It is your job to tell me why your character is adventuring, not mine." (First Rule is "Don't Be a Dick", Second is "The monsters are more likely to eat you if you're not a team.") The process I go through when starting a campaign usually runs...

Planescape 5e Planescape- What would you like to see in the upcoming setting?

My main interest in Planescape is the factions! Love them, but I absolutely agree with your criticisms. The idea that adherence to an ideology brought some amount of power was intriguing. Writing more about them and fleshing them out for Planescape was a goal of mine, bue education and life...

Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

If I was familiar would I have asked the question? No, I haven't acquired my copy yet. I do have today off, so I'll see if my FLGS has it.

Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

As a tangent, once Alicia gets her stuff together who is obligated to make a new character? Certainly, I can see this as a friction point for drama and motivation. However, it seems to place a time limit on the campaign. Unless your plan is that, depending on what happens with Alicia, Aedhros...

D&D 5E What Seven Classes Would You Keep? (and why!)

Fighter - Martial expert; knowledgeable in arms, engines, tactics, and even strategy. Wizard - Magical expert; can cast any spell, although not every spell, aware of the unseen. Cleric- Servant of the powers; tightly themed spells and abilities, defender of mortals from the unseen. Rogue-...

D&D General Converting AD&D saving throws to stat-based saves

I would say it's save vs. Spells instead of R/S/W since there is an intelligence behind the magic. However, it is a generic statement, so for those abilities that would use a different save due to the hierarchy, you would do that instead as per usual.

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

Medical. The last party I was invited to was during a conference in Las Vegas. A drug company had rented out an entire exclusive night club, fed us a buffet with a prime rib cutting station, open bar, music, dancing, &c. In a certain ... "zone" (hard to say "room") of the club there was a...

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

I thought it was Goodman, I must be mistaken. I'm pretty sure there was a company that stated that they were going to accept the next scheme, and were very quiet otherwise. Are only bloggers and YouTubers invited? Or have only such people commented that they were invited?

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

Exactly. Kobold Press isn't likely to get an invite. I think Goodman Games mentioned that they were going forward with the OGL 1.x plan. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they got an invite.

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

Okay, I've heard of Ginny, although I think through a different angle. She's a big cosplayer, costume designer? We'll see what happens late April, I guess? Thinking about it, WotC could do worse than the Med Rep style of advertising. As far as writers go, who's printed a hardback in the past...

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

Says who? The only reason I've even heard of this is from this thread. I'm hardly well connected, is there a Twitter outrage storm going on? Also, there may be more authors and such invited beyond YouTubers and they just haven't said anything yet. Who has said they have an invite beyond Bob?

WotC WotC invites Bob the World Builder and other creators to an in person Summit.

As a member of a profession that was wined and dined heavily until it was made illegal to do so, this isn't much. This isn't "influencing the influencers" (although there is that) so much as "damage control". This is Wizards mending fences and trying to make sure the influencers don't actively...

Case Studies in Intellectual Property: Dick Tracy

Well... presumably WB receives royalties but that's based on showing. It's natural that the royalties any actor receives declines over time for a specific property. With sequels you have a new property within a franchise which will inherently generate interest in previous properties. So he will...

Case Studies in Intellectual Property: Dick Tracy

Not these days, no. Most of the villains were named after some sort of distinctive physical feature; Mumbles, Flat Top, The Brow, Little Face, &c. Probably why they all got greased by Big Boy in the first five minutes of the film. One of the distinctive pieces of super-tech that Tracy had is...

Avoiding Death Spirals WHILE making damage count

I don't address the problem before, so much as after. There is usually sufficient healing that by the time someone goes down, they can be brought back to 1+ hp fairly straightforwardly. That's when the penalties kick in. I use a variant of the Wound / Vitality point system (Grit / Health)...
