Was The Witcher Inspired by an AD&D Campaign?

"His writing is derivative, his world a generic pastiche. " Well there's your proof. Exactly like most D&D campaigns. Not that that prevents either books, or games, from being FUN mind you.

removing cantrips: what to give instead?

Make Cantrips require the players Focus/Holy Symbol/Instrument etc. If they don't have it, it uses a 1st level (or higher) spell slot to cast. That goes a long way towards one of the most common complaint of "Cantrips are so much better because you can't be disarmed while I have to lug around...

    WotC Removes Latest Unearthed Arcana

I find "Killing someone is ok, but doing X to them is worse" baffling regardless of what X is. And especially when X is mind control of some sort. "It takes away their agency!" Being dead certainly takes ALL of someones agency away. Permanently. How can taking their agency away temporarily be...

    WotC Removes Latest Unearthed Arcana

We need to let the wisdom of Zardoz guide us in these turbulent debates.

    WotC Removes Latest Unearthed Arcana

None of this is a problem once you accept the premise that all Love deities, Love worshipers, and Love itself are all at their core irredeemably evil and destructive. ... and also that it works the same way in D&D.

Gatekeeping Part II: The OG (Original Gatekeeping)

"People playing FATE aren't playing D&D for the same reason that people reading Dickens aren't reading Shakespeare." "I'm reading Shakespeare, but my version doesn't have all the iambic pentameter and metre, and has some car chases added." "That doesn't sound like Shakespea..." "STOP...

Gatekeeping Part II: The OG (Original Gatekeeping)

Are people playing FATE playing D&D? If not, (given the argument above) why not?

On gatekeeping and the 'live-streaming edition wars'

"I'd like to play a Gatekeeper Oath Paladin in your game. Pretty please?" Sorry, Gatekeeper Oath Paladins should only be played by REAL D&D fans. You aren't qualified to Gatekeep.

On gatekeeping and the 'live-streaming edition wars'

Has anyone - ANYONE - in this thread, actually said that people who watch streams like CR, but don't actually play, are not D&D fans. And if not, then ... what exactly is the argument about?

On gatekeeping and the 'live-streaming edition wars'

Y'know, considering the amount of general griping around here, I'm not 100% sure that people who play can even be counted as "fans" of D&D.

    D&D in USA Today

"How many times must we see this same article?" Every 40 days, for the next 17 years. After that it will arrive as an aerosolized mist.

5E REALLY REALLY BAD DM ADVICE

Every time the characters descend a level in a dungeon, they should gain a character level. Of course this goes the other way on the way back up. That's how you keep things balanced!

Hero Forge Custom Color Mini Kickstarter Is Live - And Funded!

Y'know, the color printed ones, with just 5 minutes of "anyone can do it" inkwash and/or drybrush, would probably come close enough to the hand-painted ones for general use. It's really contours/highlights that they are missing.

5E REALLY REALLY BAD DM ADVICE

You can never allow anything in your game that isn't in one of the Core rule books, physical or electronic, by anyone.

5E REALLY REALLY BAD DM ADVICE

You absolutely have to allow everything in your game that's printed in every book or supplement or article, physical or electronic, by anyone.

I disagree with you Morrus, but I did ask my question because I was interested in the general opinion. Thank you, and the others, for the responses.

On gatekeeping and the 'live-streaming edition wars'

"As I've asked elsewhere - Why are you making a distinction? What purpose does it serve?" Because precision in communication is useful to understanding, and not necessarily indicative of bad faith?
