D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

For me it's just that being soulless has mechanical consequences, or at least requires the game to add "but the Dark Powers make sure this has no impact". Some of these are interesting - a soul-eating being would be ravenous! Some of these are awkward - all corrupted soul type undead are...

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Magic Jar is historically a ghost signature ability. Arguably a person without a soul is more like a construct than a humanoid. Many kinds of undead are assumed to be formed from human souls, so Ravenloft should be one of the least-haunted places in the multiverse.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

    It makes it post-horror.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

It's a horror setting. Souls being messed with is like half of the crazy stuff that can happen.

    Someone uses Magic Jar.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Eh? This is D&D. There are monsters and spells that use souls. It's not like a philosophical discussion, it"s a mechanical one.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Souls have mechanics, so it does matter.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Really we need an epic adventure where Real Ravenloft and Neo-loft collide.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

The Prime is barely a fraction as real as the Inner planes, and the Prime's constant failure to keep it real lead to the Outer Planes where all the stuff in your head got loose and started mucking things up for the real reality. So nyeh. :p -- Shadowfell and Ravenloft both used to be...

D&D 5E Boon Ideas for a God of Maintaining Cultural Norms and Resistance to Change

Might be worth looking into the old wu-jen taboos for inspiration. A conformity escalation mechanic might be good - the more conformity, the more benefits, but the tiers get increasingly ridiculous and hard to keep up with.

D&D 5E Boon Ideas for a God of Maintaining Cultural Norms and Resistance to Change

I would aim for a boon that could also impede the user. Make it a bit strong, but also make it prevent buffs from allies using the same concept, or have consequences if those buffs get through.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Fantasy horror is inherently silly. It's a matter of how much we accept the setting's tone whether it comes off as scary or campy. This difference is why horror films make me sleepy.

D&D General Ravenloft: Monsters vs Darklords

Dark Lords, like deities, can do just fine as background elements rather than campaign cores. Dark Sun isn't just fighting sorcerer kings and Planescape doesn't need to involve getting mazed. You shrink the world if you create inevitable destinations.

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Player Core 2

I'm hoping they sneak in some fixes for things that should have been fixed for the Player Core 1. Survival really needs decent feats.

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Player Core 2

Nice! Gotta say I'm glad to have jumped on this bandwagon now, so I don't have to unlearn anything.

    D&D (2024) Player’s Handbook (2024)

You really don't need the books to play the game, they're just much more pleasant to read than the freely-provided OGL etc. documents. The only 5E books I own are the Planescape set and I could still cobble together a campaign without paying a cent or doing anything dubious. The barrier is...

Hopefully to be launched with an ORC and Pi adventure.

It includes errata, but also includes non-errata design changes.

D&D (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I imagine more granular "Are you excited?" options would provide clarity. A lot of folk buy whatever ensures they can play rather than what they want.

D&D (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I will say that, if I was going to play, I'd go for the newer rules, but that doesn't mean much when I don't have a 5.0 library to consider. I don't see a reason to expect the new rules to be less playable than the old ones.
