D&D General Is there a model for a megadungeon

I once started a 5-room inspired megadungeon that was a highway to Hades - the mythical path Orpheus walked from the surface to Hades' Realm. It consisted of many lairs and mini dungeons hanging off of main underdark passage (drawn similar to the underdark hex crawls from AD&D D1 and D2...

D&D General How am I a D&D outlier? How are you one?

I believe our table style is a bit of an outlier as we still play primarily older modes of D&D with 5E. 1. Heavy use of large dungeons and dungeon exploration. 2. Resource management and encumbrance is a factor (plus food, water, light, ammunition). 3. Experience points matter; no...

    D&D 5E Is 5e really that different?

In my circles (older edition gamers - pre 3rd edition) 5E comes across as very high magic, with crazy overpowered superheroic characters. It's not a good emulation of classic fantasy or literature without many optional rules applied. The typical Adventurer's League D&D party looks like a...

D&D 5E Rebooting Dungeon of the Mad Mage

Just here to say I can relate. The first time my group tussled with the drow priestess, they ran for their lives. The second time, invading the ruined city from the south, was a near TPK (3 fallen characters became spider-fodder much like your players). After several side adventures, rebuilding...

WotC New M:tG set announced: "Adventures in the Forgotten Realms"

Core D&D doesn’t have an apocalypse world where Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth are striding the landscape, so that could be the unique angle for Zendikar (if that’s the setting book). D&D vs Cthulhu... or at least Emrikul, Kozilek, and Ulamlog, the Eldrazi.

    D&D 5E 5E's poor book bindings

I’m pretty sure my books that have fallen apart we’re earlier prints (receipts long gone) but based on some of the stories with customer service shared here I’ll drop them a note and see what happens. Overall though, 5E is a pretty solid system and looks built to last, it’d be good for WOTC to...

    D&D 5E 5E's poor book bindings

I'm on my second monster manual, second player's handbook, and several of the earlier adventure books the pages have started to crack away from the spine. (I'm very much spoiled by the higher book quality in 1E AD&D or some of the indy OSR publishers - those 70's books were indestructible)...

D&D General What is D&D? A Universal Definition

What is D&D: I play Conan, you play Gandalf, and we team up to battle Dracula. (Not my quote, but one I love).

D&D 5E The Monsters Know what they are doing $2.99 in ebook format!

I wrecked my PC's after perusing the beholder tactics in the book. I'm a big fan of what Keith has done with the book and his blog - it's helped me run much better tactical combats. Definitely very good if converting monster stat blocks into ready-made tactics don't come naturally to you.

WotC Ray Winninger Is Head of D&D RPG Team; Mike Mearls No Longer Works on RPG

Now that Ray has been formally introduced, maybe he’ll share a vision for where the line is going. I too loved Dungeoncraft from back in the idea (and still use the advice on secrets - funny how that one stuck). Welcome Ray! (How can there not be a top tier Marvel game with how popular MCU...

D&D General What Style of Campaign Do You Prefer?

Exploratory and Episodic. Could have had sandbox, open world, or West Marches as a style to encapsulate a common campaign type.

WotC 5E 2020 Book Clue - I need your help!

I saw words like heraldry, population, and militia, and immediately got excited thinking this is it, finally getting 5E Greyhawk treatment, but that would be at the nation level (not rival towns). The old Greyhawk boxed set was full of that info. Sounds like a sub-region in FR like "Volo's...

D&D 5E What proportion of the population are adventurers?

Here's a screen cap from our last game that shows what dnd4vr is suggesting - I put an iPad camera by the battlemap (and joined the meeting from two devices - laptop and iPad). In Zoom, the players can double click on an attendee (including the battlemap camera) to make it full screen as...

D&D 5E What proportion of the population are adventurers?

This thread had gotten me thinking, so I took a look at some old school starting bases, Hommlet and the Keep, and compared them to Phandalin, the iconic 5E starting village. Hommlet has 20% leveled characters, including several 8th level local lords, and a 7th level druid. Keep on the...

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

BECMI was an amazing system, and I played it (and most of the B and X series modules) more than most AD&D modules and spent a lot of table time in Glantri and Karameikos. Bruce Heard (up thread) delivered most or all of the Gazetteer books for Mystara as line manager for those products.

D&D General Help Me Build the D&D Game I Want to Run

Reynard, reading your campaign idea sounds like you are aiming for an old-school style wilderness based sandbox with challenging site-based dungeons out in the wilds. Love it. Plus you want to make sure the players need to do some planning and resource management. Here are some thoughts...

D&D General Help Me Build the D&D Game I Want to Run

Will the game be human-centric or is it “anything goes” with 5E’s myriad races? XP for gold and exploration or 5E’s default fight fight fight? (Then I’ll have more suggestion).
