D&D General Pitch Perfect - Using a Pitch Deck for Your D&D Campaign

For folks like us who don't have a steady gaming crew, finding the perfect players and setting clear expectations is super crucial to start any game on the right foot. I've found that using a Pitch Deck for my campaigns is a killer way to attract the right kind of adventurers and lay down some...

D&D 5E Places of Power as magic rewards in D&D

The idea has been floating around since the earlies days of DnD so it wouldn't surprise me if it was more codified in 3e. 5e uses this as the basis for Lair Actions, which is fine enough but it's tied to the monster and doesn't present much to the player. I've used this for some great...

D&D General Improved Marked Option for 5e.

If that works for you then go for it. Yes, I think you're trying to convert the 4e version of Marked to 5e. Simple isn't a flaw, it's a feature. The post I made is an improvement on the Mark Option in Chapter 9 of the 5e DMG.

D&D General Improved Marked Option for 5e.

There's an option in the 5e DMG to implement a Marked option in combat. Basically, a martial can designate one target they attack that wont consume their reaction if they make an Opportunity Attack. This seems needlessly complex to me and I wrote a post recently suggesting the following...

D&D General D&D Book Prices Are Going Up

Kidding aside, I don't generally mind the increase. I can afford it. I'd feel a bit better about it if I knew it was going to writers and artists instead of shareholders.

That brutal inflation rate of 20% we've all been working under.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

If DM fiat works for you then go for it. Right tool for the right job. As to why, I literally wrote a whole article as to why.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

Sure. Right tool for the right job. XP works best for me with a group of friends in a longer campaign when the friends like to reminisce about their actions and the game. I use Milestone in my online games with people who just pop into play. It's not that Milestone is bad, I use it myself. I...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

You hit on something unacknowledged here. Milestone is SUPPOSED to be handing out XP at particularly points, and DM levels ups a whole different thing. At least in my experience, nobody uses it like that and everyone just assumes the idea that Milestone is DM Level ups. I do in this post but...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

I made a recent post summarizing the benefits of XP over Milestone in DnD I hope will be interesting. Milestone is fine, but it's become the default progression method in DnD from what I've seen. So I decided to try to put together a case for why I think it can be effective still. Right tool...

Thanks. That more would be interesting but I wanted to keep it as short as possible. I'm riffing on some GDC surveys.

    D&D 5E DMDave Adventure Thoughts?

I was on his Patreon for awhile. They're fine. I believe he pays people to write most of them and doesn't write them himself. They're smash and bash, but are as fun as anything else. For the price of the Patreon it seems pretty worth it if you need lots of options for adventures.

D&D 5E How Would You Implement Skill Deficiencies in D&D 5e?

I wouldn't. I do have instances where I only allow rolls by someone proficient though.

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

By all means do that if you like it and can maintain players for it. Even then, the goal isn't to kill the players but to challenge them against very lethal dangers.

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

I see this discussed in various places. I don't see how this enhances a game. Between spells that do multiple hits like magic missile or scorching ray, and the number of foes with multi-attack. I don't see how DMs don't kill players in almost every fight someone goes down. Everyone should...
