D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

I've only every handled it RAW, but I've also never had anyone fall off an airship and not get caught by someone or something. If they just fell, they'd need some special feature beyond "a lot of hit points" - or maybe not, depending on the details of the character and scenario.

D&D General Which medieval monsters are different then their dnd equivalent?

Also the tarrasque was just a turtle dragon, and could have been a really big snapping turtle if those were a thing in France. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarasque

    D&D General Universal Subclasses

Or, in the other direction: the subclass needs to be able to vary its presentation based on the base class. An example of something that I thought could make a decent universal subclass was beastmaster - because anyone could have a pet, especially if it doesn't need to be a beast, but it's too...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

I think they're (and I'm) disagreeing with the idea that Apocalypse World is the "face" of Neotrad. The article defining it for purposes of this discussion cites two types of DnD (3e Living Greyhawk and Critical Role's 5e campaigns) as the most-obvious, best known Neotrad games. Saying Prince...

D&D General Which Edition Had The Best Dragons?

I don't have a clear favorite lore-wise as I tend to just blend it all together anyways. 4e, as usual, had the best mechanics IMO but I get why it bounces off some people. BUT if I want dragon riders to be a core part of the game experience, I need to use the 1e version (with updated math). 5e...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Sure you can - there are no hard rules for playing Neotrad as it's a style not a ruleset - but if everyone's bringing sidekicks I wouldn't peg that as a neotrad game. You can run 5e in almost any style, btw. It's flexible like that.

D&D General Why Gnomes Are Awesome (+)

IIRC it's because in the early Cold War days, it was really hard to find Russian actors. So they went with the closest they could find, which was usually German or Nordic. The most classic example was a Swedish actor (can't find the name now) and it kinda stuck, much the way we think of "pirate...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

I really shouldn't engage but: Trad play does not normally have multiple characters per player. That might be common in OSR or Classic, but one of the things Trad did to differentiate itself was going for one pc the player was attached to rather than a stable of tokens to use ad hoc.

D&D 5E Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Just because it's normally a controller doesn't mean it can't be used other ways. But just because a tool can be used multiple ways doesn't mean it doesn't have a main intent. And just because something has a title doesn't mean all the information is in the title. Or that you can't houserule...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

There's always a set of players wo want to play against type; even if they've never played the game before they want to try the weirdest thing possible. So if half-elves exists, they'll look to play the strangest multiracial combo that the dm doesn't shut down immediately. Dragonborn/aarakokra...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

On the other hand, asking for bullet points "to make sure I don't miss the important points" is probably useful if you don't know when you'll get a chance to read it.

D&D 5E Which classes have the least identity?

I think a lot of people actually think sorcerer lacks a thematic core, as it's just "you can do magic because reasons" - it's mechanical identity (metamagic) might actually be clearer if underpowered.

D&D 5E Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Oh yeah, I'm pro-roles. They just make encounter building easier, and that's (to me) one of the more annoying parts f dming.

D&D General Why Do People Hate Gnomes?

Eh, orcs carry a lot of lore baggage that Goliaths don't, and I think that's a big part of the appeal of goliaths. They're big guys but without being hated for existing. Not everyone who wants to be strong wants to experience racism.

D&D 5E Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Just gonna pick this out: one that works in a way that isn't really easy to capture with a single word. Like a lich could be a lot of things, so it'd be easier to actually spend some page addressing spell selection and different ways a lich might deal with being attacked. If something gets a...
