A Preview of The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977

I picked up my copy a couple of hours ago, and it is massive and gorgeous. The loose back sheaf flips to a character sheet :)

D&D General Tangent from Vecna - How Many Actually Good Adventures Are There?

Return to the Tomb of Horrors is excellent. Night Below - after the first book, though I don't remember if it was actually good, but we enjoyed it back in the day. House of Strahd - I loved the suggestions for how Strahd could mess with the characters in several locations in the castle. Curse...

D&D 5E New Monster Manual Cover

Boo is just below the beholder's tongue, to Minsc's left. Edit: Didn't see the image with the red arrow. Never mind me :)

D&D 5E Here's All The Loot In B&G's Vecna: Eve of Ruin Platinum Edition

Yes, in Planescape. All the monsters with legendary resistance had reactions instead of legendary actions. Some had more than one reaction per round, and more than one option to choose from, with different triggers for each reaction.

    D&D (2024) Take A Closer Look At The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide

I haven't, mainly because I'm kinda allergic to anything related to Magic the Gathering :ROFLMAO: though I have to admit that Ravnica had some ideas that I've used for my game. I'm assuming you have something specific in mind? I must admit I have no clue what is in that book except an owl PC race.

    D&D (2024) Take A Closer Look At The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide

I agree, especially about the flexibility. When I use skill challenges, I make sure to have a few examples of things the players can do that are relevant to the situation, but also just go with the "yes and" approach. The rule of cool is the main ingredient to a great skill challenge in my...

    D&D (2024) Take A Closer Look At The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd love to see skill challenges included in the DMG. I've had great success in running skill challenges as a story device for my group. Build a scene consisting of 3 or 4 smaller scenes, each scene requires a certain number of rolls (not successes) to...

D&D Movie/TV 5 (nitpicking)) things the D&D Movie got wrong

Edgin gave bardic inspiration to Simon, so that's a bard class ability.

D&D General Kratos, God of War, CR 32, 5th Edition stats

He definitely looks like a god-slayer. At a quick glance I'd note that Parry should be a Reaction, and he has extra attacks from both God of War trait, multiattack and bonus action... personally I'd include all of them in the multiattack action (maybe specify in the trait that they are included...

    D&D 5E What's Your Favorite 3rd Part 5E Book Of 2021?

I recently bought Monte Cook's Ptolus: City by the Spire for 5e, and the level of detail in it just blows my mind. Every page includes cross-references to relevant stat blocks or descriptions elsewhere in the book, and the amount of material is staggering. There's enough material in that one...

D&D General "I have played in or run a D&D campaign set in Eberron." (a poll)

I haven't played in any other campaign setting since Eberron came out, both in 3.5, 4e, and 5e (except when I ran Curse of Strahd, but I used The Mourning as the trigger that sent the players to Barovia, and they returned to Eberron afterwards, where we continued the campaign for 2 more years).

D&D 5E Rules We Have Been Doing Wrong This Whole Time

It is not stated in the description of Magic Missiles, but in the section for Damage Rolls on page 196 in the PHB. "If a spell or other effect deals damage to more than one target at the same time, roll the damage once for all of them". I believe it was Sage Advice that clarified it.

D&D 5E Rules We Have Been Doing Wrong This Whole Time

One of my players pointed out to me recently, that it is possible to do 0 damage with an attack (for example an unarmed attack with a -1 strength modifier). I've always thought it was minimum 1 point of damage, which it was in earlier editions. Though I decided to keep the minimum 1 damage per...

D&D General Critical Role: Overrated, Underrated, or Goldilocks?

I enjoy watching CR. It makes me happy to watch other people enjoy the hobby that I've loved for nearly 30 years. CR, and Matt Mercer particularly, inspires me to be a better DM and person just generally. I don't get why people get so worked up about being able to do the same as CR or not... Be...

D&D 5E Questions About Converting Skill Challenges to 5e

I did a 5e skill challenge with my group not too long ago, so I'll just chip in with my experience of it. The PCs had to lure an astral dreadnought through the astral plane towards the githyanki city of Tu'narath, without it getting too close to them or losing interest. I set the DC to 10 +...

D&D 5E Any good alternatives to "How do you want to do this"?

I use "Please go ahead and describe it" when my players get a killing blow. I actually started doing it before I had watched Critical Role, just not very consistently, and not with the same phrase every time. Matt's "How do you want to do this?" inspired me to do it more consistently and...

D&D (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

Reduce number of races (lineages) to Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Halfling, Human, and Orc, and use more space to describe what makes each different from the others. Place more emphasis on Backgrounds, maybe have ability score adjustments at character creation be more based on Background than lineage (or...

D&D General Damn I miss Dragon Magazine

I agree, I miss it as well. My favorite article of all time is the Trifling Treasures. I still use it in my games today, but with a file I made in Inspiration Pad Pro. I combined it with the individual treasure tables from DMG for whenever my players loot random stuff.
