Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

I suppose an issue is that players might know the identity of the murderer from the outset? Yet this is essentially the same setup as a game set on the Titanic.

I kill the philosopher with my fireball.
  3. Committed Hero

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

What about games like Brindlewood Bay where the crime and evidence is generated during play?

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

If you can identify what a genre's core activities are, I'm pretty sure you could craft mechanics to support them. In terms of investigation, Robin Laws' Gumshoe system is even simpler than the coin flip example, and it works fine.

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

I would want to hear what Reynard says about his original intent. He assumes that you could "craft an appropriate ruleset," and believes that there are none.

Drama System or Primetime Adventures. This makes sense; you'd be better off playing a boardgame simulation and breathing your own life into the players.
  7. Committed Hero

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

99.9% of gamers would understand and agree with this inference.

    "My Character Would Know That"

    Good to know.

    "My Character Would Know That"

I think this might be an example of player knowledge surpassing character knowledge ;)

Running games for pay as another income stream for TTRPG companies

A one-shot with a well-known GM would probably sell out, but I don't think the idea scales well enough to be a regular business practice.

    "My Character Would Know That"

Not allowing a PC to have unwritten expertise would make it nigh impossible to play a character with high mental ability scores.

Extensive Character Sheets Are GM Oppression

In most RPGs, the PCs are the kind of exemplary persons that would know.

Extensive Character Sheets Are GM Oppression

For me, the question is "how important is the contemplated activity to the current state of the game?" - or even "what is the PC/party giving up by doing this activity?" For purposes of the discussion, I can envision instances where repairing a wagon would merit more than a passing thought. But...

Why does the BBEG always delegate?

    Narrative convention has its uses.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

Generally serious, except for supers, which tends to be light hearted.

    Planning, prep, motivation and you?

I don't think any rpg material has ever promised this in the 50 years of the hobby. But plenty of materials have bits and pieces that can be used for your campaign. I would look towards things that are geared towards sandbox or even improvisational play. For my part, I prep situations, and if...

How Accommodating to Player Preferences Should the GM Be?

It's as useful as the GM saying, "I'm going to run you through this encounter because it's cool."
  18. Committed Hero

How Accommodating to Player Preferences Should the GM Be?

The more information the GM provides up front, the less this should be an issue. They can provide a list of classes and races, or spell out the background so players know what's on the table. It will probably go a long way if the GM can articulate why a particular PC won't fit, too.

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

The more I play Sentinel Comics, the more I like it. If you want the flavor of a team supers comic I can't recommend it highly enough. That said, tactical gamers who aren't seeking that narrative experience fight back at this structure (these are the same people who solve James Bond's problems...

    D100 random Spycraft adventure hooks.
