The new edition of OSRIC does a nice job with a slightly simplified AD&D 1e type initiative system that will also help you understand the original better in retrospect if you hadn't taken the time to figure it out before now. Assuming that's of interest of course.

Well, I am tooting my own horn a bit here, but Fight On! is a great OSR resource - we were in fact one of the first to use and popularize the term "Old School Renaissance" - but, more importantly, we're back!

Back in the day the single most common house rule that I can remember was each DM's initiative system. Probably fewer than a quarter of the games I actually played in where the AD&D books were the default rules actually used segment initiative as written.
