No WotC At Gen Con This Year?

Prime is about 10,000-15,000 people bigger than GenCon (70,000 vs 60,000, though I think with the last expansion in 2015, we can get up to 75,000 folks), and I believe East is officially the same size as PAX Prime (now West) as of 2015 (The site at PAX East is much bigger than the site at PAX West).

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

We haven't been able to say anything about it for so long - reading that thread was brutal sometimes lol.

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

As for digital versions of the core 5E books - I think that is still a conversation WotC (Magic the Gathering side) has to have with game stores.

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

We can FINALLY freaking talk about it now, lol.

D&D 5E 1 Year later: D&D still strong on amazon

FWIW; in Seattle we're seeing crazy growth of 5E in terms of organized play. Went from years of one or two tables to 5-6; and frankly we just don't have enough DMs. I can echo Mike's comments that the sales of the core books so far have been extremely robust - passing that of 4E and 3E in the...

D&D 5E Are you happy with how WOTC's D&D department interacts with the fans (Frequency/ Transparency/Methods)?

My understanding was that Perkins was referring to "new setting" books (ala Al-Qadim), rather than "new book for an existing setting"? One could also argue that releasing a video game to go with the SCACG is generally much bigger than the typical book release.

D&D 5E Are you happy with how WOTC's D&D department interacts with the fans (Frequency/ Transparency/Methods)?

It also is amusing that many of the people clamoring for more communication seem to badly misinterpret the communication they do get. Heck - who says the SCACG is a "new setting book"? Hell, by definition, SCACG isn't a "new" setting book - it is the established setting, IE, Forgotten Realms...

    Who Makes WotC's Adventures?

Heh - can also confirm that a) this is pretty much what Paizo does and b) WotC has been way more involved than Paizo so far. I also sort of think this is Wizards' way of supporting 3PP indirectly if they can't go down the OGL route. Give them direct business and way more exposure than most of...

D&D 5E Dealing with a trouble player and a major blow up

There are coordinators for given regions: http://dndadventurersleague.org/regional-pages/regional-coordinators/ They are your resources for issues such as this as needed. Alternatively, PM me and I can aid you if necessary (if you're in the PNW, definitely drop me a line). I get players...

D&D 5E What would be your ideal 5E yearly product output?

So that the game has a 10+ year lifespan, no more than a single book outside the adventures a year, with occasional years of two books. Part of the problem is that folks have gotten used to a very short lifecycle for the game. A book or two per year means...10-20 more books in 10 years. That...

D&D 5E Unhappy with Psionics requiring Far Realms flavor

Well, guess it is a good thing that there's nothing to purchase here so far, is there? :-p I wouldn't worry too much about flavor-y stuff like that carrying over; most of the playtest materials often start with those kinds of details and then are removed when polished IIRC.

Mike Mearls Talks (er, Tweets) About the Industry

Fundamentally, I agree with Mike about the way 5E is going. I think that if you want a D&D type game that is heavy on crunch and full of new options every couple of months - Pathfinder is your niche. For those players; it fits their needs perfectly. As someone who has been running public D&D...

So What IS Happening to Tabletop Roleplaying Games? Dancey & Mearls Let You Know!

The problem is; I don't know if many others are the same way, where the only form of entertainment they partake in is the TRPG. I mean, I grew up playing D&D 3E as well as Baldur's Gate, and the reason I enjoyed both of them was because of each other. I don't think making good entertainment...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

Time spent != impact. It is more based on what part of the game you're working on, and when in its' development you stepped in. You could have someone who is only there for a few months, but comes up with the basic mechanics (like, for instance, everything is an ability check, and we have...

D&D 5E Light release schedule: More harm than good?

Some of the assumptions about the profitability of 4E and how many people actually play PF are not accurate, fyi. I think their reasoning for slowing the schedule down is wise; what usually contributes to the death of a system is the demands of ever rising profits, which usually lead to more...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

You would probably have to ask Mearls or Cook themselves; I am not privy as to what he specifically worked on. I just remember the letter that Wizards wrote when Cook announced he was leaving; it was almost like they were in shock. I think they imagined Monte would be a big part of this new...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

Cook was a pretty big part of the design process - his leaving WotC had nothing to do with the 5E process and had to do with (IIRC) Hasbro not allowing him to make games that could potentially compete with 5E while working on 5E. IE, Numenera. IIRC, there was another developer from WotC who...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

Nah; much more on the "Pathfinder will sell its license to cheap for us!" bandwagon. You should ask Goblinworks how much the Pathfinder license cost to make the MMO. Obsidian developed a bad rep for messing up KOTOR 2 (they underestimated the time necessary to make the game, and Lucasarts...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

Don't ever ask the Bioware KOTOR 1 developers about KOTOR 2 and Obsidian. Many of the developers used to be friends before KOTOR 2 came out. Obsidian....ugh. They did some shady things. (I worked in the games media at the time all that was going down)
