    Would you have allowed this?

I'm of two minds on this: 1) It should be damned near impossible, even given a Dwarf, a rope, and a 22 INT. (Now if you had a wheelbarrow and a holocaust cloak... ;) ) DC25 is the low end of my "acceptable DC range"; DC30 is more like it. Time spent working on accuracy would have helped...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

I was involved early on in this thread, and came back to see where it went. Wow. Amazing how it's migrated. Anyway, some things I see: I don't think anyone has suggested that capricious rules changes in the middle of a campaign are a good idea. I do think it's the DM's right to do so, but...

So, what makes 1e adventures so great?

How many times have you run into a "new" critter where the players already know the templates? While unique, it's not exactly new... :heh: Not to sound like a old fart, but we were mixing monsters and adding class levels in 1981. Now you kids get off my lawn! ;) Then you've got a good...

So, what makes 1e adventures so great?

I ran into that when I got back into DMing. I built a trap using the old AD&D rules, and found out later that the trap rules had changed. (Luckily the outcome would have been identical.) One of the problems I see with 3rd Edition is that creativity is getting stifled by rules. When you know...

So, what makes 1e adventures so great?

Thanks for the links. I remember the Tharizdun module. Very creepy and foreboding, once you got past the critters. A lot of the early modules (S1, U1, etc) had that creepy "what's going on?" atmosphere to them that I haven't seen as much these days. Or maybe I was just more gullible...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

Er, no. I said that the only recourse was to discuss or leave; those aren't trump cards. A trump card would be some kind of rule that says, "You can't do this." But since all D&D rules are subject to the DM, there can be no "the DM is wrong" rule. He can be wrong-headed, a jackass, a jerk...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

Next time you argue with one of my quotes, try using the whole quote. I believe I mentioned that as a disgruntled player's only option (aside from discussing it politely, which seems to be beyond a number of folks). Oh, look, there's the whole paragraph. And it seems that you're arguing with...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

I think this argument has reached the critical mass stage, where arguing any point your opponent makes is somehow justified. :\ Storm Raven: You may want to know that Celebrim referred earlier to a massive house rule document that he does distribute to his players. This may have gotten...

So, what makes 1e adventures so great?

And the art had a certain cheesecake aspect to it that definitely appealed to this (at the time) teenage boy. Anyone else remember Morgan Ironwolf? Hubba-hubba.... ;) ;) Telas

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

Bingo! :D :D :D :D Many experienced players look at the battlemat as a chess board, and the game as a set of known challenges with fixed optimal responses (from 1st level characters). Where's the fun in that? :\ (Aside: This is my problem with 3rd Edition; it rewards munchkining...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

I don't believe anyone here referred to it as "acceptable". I referred to it as his right. It's his campaign/game/table, he can do with it as he wishes. And if he did something like that to me, he'd have to find another player. Telas

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

I run my campaign as a courtroom. If they want a ruling, then they can approach me outside the game and ask. All my House Rules are posted, and I listen to their arguments. But I alone make the decision. If I make a mistake, then I correct it afterwards, with a minimum of "do-overs", and...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

And apparently it does, since I've got people trying to get into my game. Snide remarks aside, I'm not saying any of this is A Good Thing. I am saying that the DM is the ultimate arbiter of his game, and that the players are there to play. Not to make rulings, argue, or enter into...

In-game debates and rules disputes: What do you do about them?

In the game, the DM is Gawd Awlmighty. (/southern accent) If he want to change the rules willy-nilly, kill the players for no good reason, send a level one party against an EL666 encounter, and make fun of Driz'zle, then it's his right to do so. Sure, the players may have a bad evening, get...

Once and for all- Is D&D magic overpowered?

The light just clicked on over my head. I am suddenly free of any and all threads regarding balance in D&D. No more will I have to sit through pages of accusations and recriminations of "broken" and "horrific unbalance". Ahhh, serenity... Telas' Generic Rule for D&D Balance: D&D is as...

D&D 3E/3.5 Has the Called armor enhancement made it to 3.5?

A character in a 3.5 FR camapaign I'm in had it. I believe it was a +1 enhancement equivalent for a standard action, but I'm not sure. I don't believe it would appear under a backpack, either. For what it's worth the campaign was not a giveaway in terms of feats, magic, money, and such...

    What level to start at....

Another thing I do at first level: Spend a lot of game time introducing the characters to the setting. Let them meet a few friends and enemies, barkeeps, merchants, the local constable, priests, etc. A good fistfight helps at this point, since it's nonlethal. My current campaign begins with...
