Once and for all- Is D&D magic overpowered?

It's like deciding who the best player is in football. Put Bret Favre behind a crappy offensive line, and suddenly he's not so hot.... Telas

    The most powerful class?

That may be it. Whatever it is (I've subbed in the game twice), it's damned powerful. Telas

    Diplomacy and Bartering?

This hasn't really come up. Sale prices are 50% of book value, unless the party is willing to spend a number of days tracking down the best buyer. They can attempt to haggle for up to a 20% change in sale price, but the buyers tend to have much better Diplomacy scores. After a few failed...

    D&D 4E 4E in 2008? Fact or Fiction?

First off, this actual thread: No, you won't hear it from a WizO. Sounds like a rumor. As for 4th ed, when it comes: I would love a simple system, but complexity sells. And there's the problem. How many Prestige Classes are we at now? How many races, classes, and feats? Do they really add...

    The most powerful class?

Interesting discussion, as usual. Although it's getting a bit predictable (everyone always pick Cleric or Druid). The real weakness of the Divine Spellcaster is not obvious. His options are strictly limited by his religion and alignment, moreso than almost any other class. Let me throw...

So, what makes 1e adventures so great?

Well, how do I follow a post by Erik Mona.... Poorly, I guess. :heh: I first played D&D in 1979. Novelty was a big part of the early modules, but there were some other elements as well. As Erik mentioned, a lot of time was spent playing the game, not arguing tactics, looking up spells...

    What level to start at....

Ditto to the start-em-at-first, advance-em-rapidly chorus. Maybe 150% XP for the first two levels...? As an old-school gamer, I've found that I tend to be very conservative with XP past 3rd level, generally handing out about 1/2 - 2/3 of "by the book" XP. I don't understand how a character...

Once and for all- Is D&D magic overpowered?

Improved Initiative + Archer-type + Readied action = no problem. (Generally speaking, of course.) ;) Also, the game is designed around a balanced party, not PvP. It's assumed that you'll have a cleric or wiz at your side. While not perfectly accurate, that's the original concept. Telas

    What rules don't work?

Wow, sorry I missed all that. :( I've been dealing in both politics and personal attacks for years.... :p Telas

    Good mini for a Shifter?

Yeah, I like that Paladin. Just don't get the "My Little Unicorn" mini... ugh. http://www.telusplanet.net/public/vesivus/eBay/dndminis/AF_Unicorn.jpg T

    Good mini for a Shifter?

Thanks for the link; I didn't know all the D&D minis were online. I think I'll just use my Longtooth Barbarian for now. Aspect of Nerull says: "Are you ready to rock?!?!?" :p Telas

    What rules don't work?

Actually, not really. :] I speak as a personal trainer, a former Infantry soldier, a judge at a knife-fighting tournament, and someone who's been to far too many knife-fighting seminars. :uhoh: I'm not bragging, just qualifying. ;) There are two basic targets for a blade: blood vessels...

    Good mini for a Shifter?

I'm playing in an Eberron campaign as "Chase", a Wildhunt Shifter Ranger (studded leather, buckler, short bow, and longsword). I'm looking for a mini to represent him. So far, I've seen one Shifter mini, the WotC plastic Longtooth Barbarian. I can use that if necessary, but I prefer "real"...

Which explains everything. I'm not a huge fan of Salvatore or Drizzt. Thanks for the input. T

    Drow and spell-like abilities

Good way to put it, and that's basically how I interpret it. Yet another example of poor wording in the rules. Telas

    What rules don't work?

See other section re: Tumble. ;) I think Tumble is hugely powerful for a skill with a set DC. The best test to see if something is too powerful is to see how many characters in the RPGA have it. (Tumble, Spiked Chain, etc. Note: Not all RPGA players are munchkins, but IME the best examples...

    What rules don't work?

 I haven't really thought out solutions to these, but I'll gripe anyway: Attacks of Opportunity - They bog down combats, and create an incentive against movement in combat, with the exception of Monks and some Rogues. If you turn to run away, and I try to trip you, how do you get to hit...

    What rules don't work?

I'll hazard a guess, since I pretty much do the same thing. That wyvern hit you, just not badly. It's stinger found a chink in your armor, and tagged you about as badly as getting hit with a half-inch knife blade. However, it was covered in poison, which immediately seeped into the wound (or...
