So I made an Encounter Builder and Monster Index

The sheet should be updated to accommodate larger or smaller parties, with the multiplier for encounter building adjusting based on being small (1-2), average (3-5), or large (6+). I also added monsters from the Hoard of the Dragon Queen adventure to the index, which fills it out nicely. 5e...

So I made an Encounter Builder and Monster Index

Wellp! I missed that bit. Give me some time to see if I can get the sheet to take those into account.

So I made an Encounter Builder and Monster Index

It should work fine with smaller parties - even a single PC. The way encounter budgets are assembled doesn't really care about numbers of PC's except as a +n value. There are 5 example PC's input - my old 4e party! - but they're only there as an example. All the blue highlighted cells in that...

So I made an Encounter Builder and Monster Index

Thanks! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think. Some screenshots of the sheet in action. PC's levels are input here - the sheet reads each characters level and indexes the proper XP value they provide to encounter building, then sums those values to give you budget totals for easy...

So I made an Encounter Builder and Monster Index

Mostly for my own use, but I thought some of you might see some use from an excel sheet that autocalculates encounter budgets and XP values. The .xcl file is available via DropBox. I left some example variables in place (a few PC's, and an encounter with 2 CR 1/2 critters) - just clear those...

Kickstarter Exalted 3e Kickstarter - 24 hours away

The closest you can get to that is with the PDF pledge level, unfortunately. The regular book is coming out no matter what - the kickstarter is just for the deluxe and some special side-items, like the GM screen. If you just want to go "hell yeah" and then buy the regular book when it comes out...

Kickstarter Exalted 3e Kickstarter - 24 hours away

It's not for a plain copy of the book - that'll be available when the book is released. This is for the deluxe, leather-bound, gold-embossed version. The actual corebook is supposed to be going for 60 bucks, cheaper if you take the black and white printing.

Kickstarter Exalted 3e Kickstarter - 24 hours away

The goals they're talking about look pretty reasonable in scope - previews for later content (infernals, etc) would be something I wouldn't be surprised to see expanding.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. If my book sale keeps churning, I might kick in that way.

Back to Basics: Races as Class

I ran a long and successful campaign of Rules Cyclopedia where several racial classes were featured among PC's. I really liked them, but I also allowed people to play, say, an Elf using the mage class for a non-combat elf, and I also allowed someone to use the Elf class to play a fighter/mage. I...

How Do You Prefer To Buy Your RPG Products?

I used to vastly prefer brick and mortar, but Drivethru has my eternal allegiance. I buy a lot of RPG's just to read, and while PDFs don't have the same form factor, they're alot easier on my shelves and wallet. If I'm going to run or play something, I'll track down a hardcopy in my FLGS.

    tips for getting proof readers?

It's been mentioned upthread, but do make sure that your convention playtests aren't run by you or your personal playtest group. It's too easy to explain the rules rather than seeing how well the game runs straight out of the book.

How many RPGs do you own?

I collected games pretty casually for a long time. I'm lucky enough to have a good used books store in town (Powells) and I've also aggressively searched stuff out on Drivethru and Amazon. I'm shedding a lot of my collection now because PDF's on my iPad are so much nicer and less space-intensive.

    Torchbearer

This is already so much of my style when I GM a game that it's a joy to see it put into mechanical terms. I was a little bit on the fence about hopping on board the Torchbearer KS (I'm kinda broke!) but now I'm absolutely sold.

    Post character death

I tend to introduce helpful minor NPC's for this very reason. The cop contact the Shadowrunners deal with on a regular basis and has drinks with them on the weekends, or the PC's ex-girlfriend, or the nerdy college kid who works at MIT's magical library, or whatever. All shadowrun examples, but...

    Stubborn

My group tends to be more willing to try a game the smaller it is. I had to fight pretty hard to get stuff like L4R and Rogue Trader on the menu - both of which are big, expansive settings my players have no experience with. I had an easier time with Shadowrun, which some of us were already...

    tips for getting proof readers?

A friend of mine is lucky enough at a print shop, and was able to print up a dozen dozen ashcan versions of his game. Fortunately, it's an indie game, so it was all of about 25 pages long. When we went to PAX last year he handed them out like candy to just about anybody we met that was remotely...

Kickstarter Exalted 3e Kickstarter - 24 hours away

Yeah, the KS is on track to be pretty huge. Considering that it took their previous effort almost the whole month to break 300k, Exalted 3 is looking pretty nuts.

    Numenera RPG

I'm regretting not hopping aboard the kickstarter for this. Is there any benefit to preordering through Drivethru, or can I snag the PDF when it comes out? Cash is tight and all.
