Possible third subclass might be artificer/alchemist or even witch: instead of studying via texts you learn to focus magic through objects, such as potions, wands/staves, weapons, or all sorts of other things. Maybe you get some charges for your core spells and use spell slots for other things...

My “other” vote is due to completely forseen work-related absences (specifically I was on a work trip so couldn’t make it) - we knew a month ahead of time we’d miss that week. My more normal reasons are illness and work emergency.

In the games I'm still in it's simply a lack f interest in switching. It works fine and we already know it. This isn't so much "familiarity" since we probably would change if we had a reason to, we just lack a reason. So "inertia" is more accurate.

I'm actually in two games at the moment - one is switching to the new rules but holding on to anything that hasn't been updated like subclasses. The other game isn't switching at all, although we might revisit the idea after the current campaign ends.

My only issue is with Warlock invocations - in addition to Agonizing Blast not working correctly you can't select 2014 Invocations like Eldritch Sight. It's just not an option anymore.

For online play this isn't an issue at all; there are a lot worse websites to have on the second tab. Trying to run DnD Beyond and Foundry at the same time can be an issue, but that's mostly because of Foundry.

Have you considered more Forgotten Realms? That’s probably what you’re missing. (I agree. They’ve basically declared that they will not be doing anything actually new for ten years.)

The decapitation aspect doesn't come up much and isn't really controlled by the player, so I wouldn't put a lot of value on it. It's cool when it happens but not really a major increase in power. +3 at level 4 is a bit much,, but scaling that part of it is simple to execute.

I would say that, for me at least, the biggest difference in how the game feels is 1) pc's are both tougher and more competent earlier. This is not as big a jump from 4e as it is from other editions where low-level pc's were frail and limited, but 4e also tended to throw tougher enemies at you...

Depends on the concept, of course. Shifter + a sub/class that can be reflavored as shapechanging or some such. So, barbarian, druid, and blood hunter are all solid options. Alternatively, I'd happily run a campaign where the whole party is werewolves or werebears or whatever.

I prefer there being some lore for inspiration, even if I’m gonna replace at least half. The only time it gets annoying is when people assume that printed lore is a rule for all games.

If the player is bluffing their intimidation, I might have them roll both checks and decide what happens based on that. Maybe deception first, and if it’s believed then intimidate with advantage or maybe it’s a gimme. Depends on how good the first roll was.
