    [August] What Are You Reading?

Started A Dance With Dragons. After that, I think I'm going to read Longitude.

    Full Release when?

My guess has been previews at GenCon with releases for the holiday season so they can market it to coincide with the 40th anniversary.

Why I like skill challenges as a noncombat resolution mechanic

Well, there IS a chart of DCs set to tasks and their difficulty. What's missing is the "level appropriate" bit, but that's as simple as deciding on the difficulty of the task yourself and using that DC. Which is pretty much what you do for 4E, isn't it? Not turning this thread into a rehash, but...

Why I like skill challenges as a noncombat resolution mechanic

Wait, how is that different from how I did/do skills in any other edition? I have this distinct feeling that the way skills work in my 3E/PF games work pretty much the same as the way you run skill challenges in 4E, and I've been doing it much longer than 4E has been around. I'm not at all...

Why I like skill challenges as a noncombat resolution mechanic

What did you use for a DC, and how did you arrive at that particular number yourself? The same as 4E? Find something else to do?

    Console RPG thoughts

I think I will be picking this up sometime this month. Everything I've heard from friends has been exemplary, so it moved to the top of my list of games to buy.

Why I like skill challenges as a noncombat resolution mechanic

I wish I still had my house rules for "social combat" that I wrote when my players were going to be in a Brelish courtroom. It was more sophisticated than the skill challenge system (and being a house rule, probably way too complex), but it felt better to me than the 4E skill challenge system as...

Convincing 4th Edition players to consider 5th Edition

I made a similar point in a PM to Neonchameleon. I don't know how viable that is (or even if it is viable), but there are games on the market right now that are the same game with different versions and modeling but all released under the same brand. Take Monopoly. There were at least four...

Losing Interest in the D&D Next Playtest?

They do release new stuff every week. Several times a week, in fact. But if you mean new mechanics and stuff to test, that's a bit absurd. My game group doesn't even meet once a week (every other for right now).

Losing Interest in the D&D Next Playtest?

This is one of my concerns as well. I'm still playtesting, but any new feedback that I want to give, I don't really have the ability to do it in a fashion that I think will get any real notice. I was kind of hoping that surveys on the first iteration of the playtest would come out once a month...

Convincing 4th Edition players to consider 5th Edition

This is a ridiculous strawman and doesn't represent any game of D&D I've ever played. EDIT: It does, however, represent at least a few games of Shadowrun I've played in.

    The swinginess of low levels.

As much as it pains me to agree with Hussar, that's not a valid comparison, considering modern door construction. The better comparison is to find someplace that has full wooden doors of the type of construction in place in the 1700s or so (I grew up in one - the house my parents own was built...

    [July] What are you watching?

The Mentalist and Camelot are the two shows we're watching from Netflix (discs). Last night I found out that a bunch of George Carlin standup specials are on Netflix Watch Instantly, so that's going to the top of my streaming queue.

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

That by itself is an interesting idea. Probably too easy/breakable, but just the idea that you give up your second roll to try to apply an effect. So you have advantage versus an orc. You'd have to announce giving up your second roll before you roll, obviously, but if you're successful with your...

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

That's an interesting analysis, Mustrum_Ridcully. Tactic 3 is obviously Iron Heroes, and you're right that the problem with that is that by the time you've gained tokens enough to do something with them, using them isn't all that spectacular or interesting. It often made more sense just to...

    The Healing Paradox

Can be, and is for some games. I don't like it in my D&D. I do like those. But again, not in my D&D. I even really like Dungeon World (haven't had a chance to play it yet, though), but I approach it differently than I do D&D. I resent being forced to change my playstyle to play the same game...

    Base measurement in DDN

The problem I see is that moving in diagonals is a large speed boost. With measurement only in squares, it's not as obvious a problem, but when we go back to measurement in feet, the discrepancy becomes very large. Yes, but that is easily rectified by having templates. Plus, 30 was just ignored...

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

Yeah, I don't buy that. Obviously the feel of gameplay is subjective, but I don't see any of the hallmarks of the Forge imprinted in 4E. It's decidedly unlike Sorcerer, Trollbabe, Dogs in the Vineyard, or Apocalypse World. EDIT - Although I suppose if I took just the gamist aspects of the GNS...

    [July] What are you reading?

Finished A Storm of Swords and moved on to A Feast for Crows. After Feast I'll be going back to Sandman Slim and his escapades because I don't own A Dance with Dragons yet. I've also started Basho and his Interpreters as I get more and more exposure to and experience* with composing haiku...

    The swinginess of low levels.

Did that. No one died in a year of gaming with monsters at prescribed levels. Not on me at all. I ran the creatures extremely effectively, but they just didn't do enough damage to make a difference, and healing was so available and usable that there wasn't really any way to challenge the players...
