D&D 5E How to convince better half

Sage advice!! I particularly liked the reality checks and baby steps if she expresses a modicum of openness. It's interesting, we started the quarantine playing board games and spending a ton of family times, but sadly we've become relegated to more and more screen time. I'm trying to change pace.

D&D 5E How to convince better half

Hi all - for some of the old-school gamers here, do you have any tips for enticing your better half to the D&D side? I gamed back in the day and this quarantine has sprung the itch again, however, having a young family presents a few challenges as well as opportunities. My kids are intrigued...

    D&D 5E WotC Dungeons & Dragons 2020 Product Survey

That's a well written survey. I like how they are very open ended in their questions, e.g., not only "what do you like about...x" but "what do you like or dislike about...x" etc.

D&D 5E How Do You Reward Attendance and Participation?

Tons of great ideas in this thread! I've had some good experience (pun intended!) implementing the following: Personal stories and goals for each character (e.g., a character should be working toward something important to him/her, e.g., a laboratory for arcane experiments) Quest and encounter...

    D&D 5E Are Barbarian’s “Meh”

Good question. There are probably some built up biases, as one can assume that D&D players may trend toward the nerdy (i.e., smart?!) end of the spectrum and try as one might, Barbarians are stigmatized as being fairly straightforward, less...creative characters. ;)

Larry Elmore Creates Art For Grimmerspace

Love the sneak peak into his studio space, too!

D&D on the New York Times

I'm old-school enough to subscribe to the paper-based version of the Times, and the front page of the Sunday Review section where this is contained had some "click bait" at the top saying "Why D&D beats Facebook" or something such that. Got a good smile out of me, and the point of the article is...

Larry Elmore On Composing The Companions Of The Lance Art

The photography is really well done, too! I particularly like the look of your Tanis model!

Art & Arcana Review: Leveling Up with a Special Edition

One of the things I'd emphasize is the quality and completeness of having the box. There's something nice of having everything organized in a tidy, sturdy, and gorgeous container. ;)

Spelljammer A Spelljammer Retrospective (and Why It Makes Sense for 5E)

I'm with Reynard, in that I never got into SJ, as it seemed to be the antithesis of the high fantasy of DL, which was all the rage then. I remember buying about a million D&D cards from each of the settings, and SJ ones were relegated to the side, since they did not seem to fit the espirit of...

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

Talking with friends, reading the source books and other materials, browsing this excellent forum, occasionally going to the D&D website or even checking out a random youtube video. I still need to go to a conference.

    D&D 5E Why D&D Can't Have a Good Video Game

It is a good question. I remember the SSI gold-box games fondly and the slightly derivative Wizardy series as being well done and capturing the D&D spirit. There seems to be something off in the new games, in that they fail to convey the IT factor to me, maybe they're not quite as mysterious!

How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are?

Players who choose characters with extremely high intelligence, IME, tend to be highly intelligent themselves so are able to play the part well. The same question could be asked, and even with more of a potential conundrum, around playing a character with a much higher level of wisdom. :)

Arguments and assumptions against multi classing

I suppose I'm more of a black & white guy, but when I thought about multi-classing, it always seemed to rub against the classic rubrics which made D&D very epic and meaningful to me. I suppose on another layer, I saw it as almost gaming the system and creating a character to game the system more...

    D&D: The New Poker?

I see comments about D&D being "more popular than ever" bandied about quite liberally. What is the evidence for this? I don't want to be a naysayer, and am a big proponent, but am curious the source for these claims.

One of my players wants to play a kid wizard like Harry Potter. Should i allow it?

Certainly a yes. I think it's fair to have second thoughts as a DM, but players usually have a good drive, and she seems motivated. I'd let her flow.

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

There's so much talk here about Spelljammer and Planescape that I'm starting to assume that it'll be one or both of these settings! I personally would prefer a Dragonlance, since I loved the novels, richness of the world, and could do with some Epic fantasy these days. The minotaur discussion...

    Reopening Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes

I'm enjoying the writing, lore, and art so far in the book. I remember buying the Planescape boxed set for 3rd edition IIRC, which was fun. This is a great synopsis and again the writing is so top notch the quality has spoiled me.

How do you like to handle dungeon mapping?

it's a great question. In two of my core groups there happened to be a player who was an amateur cartographer/professional architect, so he took up the mapping duties on his volition. If I hadn't the luxury of such a savant, I would've tried to work in the players receiving the map somehow.

    D&D 5E Mythological Figures: King Arthur (5E)

Love this. A lot of detail and makes sense throughout. Since Arthur is shrouded in so much mystery and legend, I don't think there can be one definitive stat block, and that's part of the idea. This version seems to click and is simple for us busy DMs. :)
