D&D 5E Balancing Warlocks on a 1-2 combat per day workload.

If these are longer encounters, I’d give them 3x their short rest slots in one big pile for the entire adventuring day. I’d do the same for battlemasters and bards (inspiration) and monks.

D&D General So...How many D&D clones/SRDs are we going to see?

It will be interesting to see which way they go. If they go their own way and pull most of their fans with them I think that’s probably a good thing - the people that want to dungeon crawl can dungeon crawl, and people that want a game like CR can play that system. On the other hand, they...

D&D General So...How many D&D clones/SRDs are we going to see?

Yeah, it would probably be my pick, but I imagine it would be hard to stand out among all the others. At least, for someone that doesn’t find their way here!

D&D General So...How many D&D clones/SRDs are we going to see?

And the term is important - those games were not that good (in the original heartbreaker period) and were not terribly successful. I suspect many of these new systems will go the same way. It is already the case that people are refusing to consider pathfinder (too crunchy). Perhaps some...

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

Odds for a typical level 1 PC, or odds for that party with those classes and that set of skills and expertise? Because the latter means that proficiency without expertise essentially becomes the new cross-class skill.

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

I don't mean this in an antagonizing way, but this is the line of thinking that leads to DC creep. Some problems have instant solutions - look at spells. Teleport, Wall of Force, Fly/Levitate, Spider Climb, even Tenser's Floating Disk. Knock. Why can't characters build towards skill-based...

    D&D General New OGL survey

I don't think they are even trying to pretend the wider community will agree - they will use that clause to nuke stuff they think makes them or their brand look bad. And I can sort of see the point. On the other hand, I can see the point about them being pressured to police content - but won't...

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

RIght, in tier 1 a high ability score can and does outweigh training, and an untrained performer (who is charismatic) will beat a non charisma primary class that spent one if its few proficienices on performance most of the time. Training seems to only really counterbalance raw ability by level...

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

While we are considering skills, we ought to consider skills per attribute. This is weirdly balanced now, and while once upon a time it might have made sense to stack skills on charisma, it is a main stat for a lot of classes now and opens up a skills game for them it does not for other classes...

    D&D General Tieflings

Oh, for sure - I don't think I'd have much problem at all with the appearance descriptions in this thread. I'm mostly just wistful for a time when every trip to town was risking a good old fashioned mob and a demon-burning.

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

Related to this, a list of things that are doable "checkless" for trained people would be nice. E.g. picking a normal indoor lock, climbing a tree, etc. I know people that can pick a master padlock in a pretty short amount of time - it shouldn't even require a check in that sort of case, unless...

I'd be ok with "hadarspawn" if it were an option.

D&D 5E So this is how D&D 5e dies, a beautiful start only to die in disgrace because of mismanagement. RIP 5e

Will the release of the new system suddenly make all electronic and paper copies of 5e self destruct? As for the new VTT, the bar is already pretty low. If they do a half decent job with it I can see switching to it.

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

It is a DM issue, but the system (and many published adventures) sets DMs up for it. If there were multiple help boxes explaining that some PCs will nearly always succeed at some checks and that's good, there's be less issue. Instead like much of 5e it is vague or explained piecemeal and left...

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

Sure, but a “solution” that requires the DM to think a step ahead is bad design. Expertise as a way to compensate for low ability makes a lot more sense to me than a way to have +15 to checks. The expertise concept seems to go against bounded accuracy when stacked on top of high ability.

I don’t anymore, because they have grown so common reaction from NPCs isn’t a thing anymore at most tables I tend to play at. That reaction was half the point for me.

D&D 5E Some thoughts on skills.

One gripe I have with the existing system is ability+proficiency+expertise leads to DC creep which can lock out characters with medium ability scores and only proficiency from activities.

I don’t think so, especially not now that they have involved a pr team. That does not mean a subsection of the community won’t continue to lose its mind with each new statement, but they’ve already skewed into conspiracy theorizing, and there is no hope for them after that.

D&D 5E So this is how D&D 5e dies, a beautiful start only to die in disgrace because of mismanagement. RIP 5e

People have a short attention span for outrage, and can usually manage only one outrage at a time. This will probably be mostly dead in 3 months, barring any new major gaffes from WotC.
