D&D General DM's Guild publishing: How much do you preview?

A decent preview that includes an adventure overview is a key factor in whether I make a purchase.

The Hidden Costs of Game Mastering

I did not experience anything like this until I ran virtual games during the height of the pandemic. I still run some virtual games, but I have greatly reduced the amount of time for a session. I can go all day in-person - three hours is my limit for virtual games.

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

We enjoy high level campaigns. We don't always go to 20, but we have. The experience point table seems to work very well for us. 1st and 2nd levels fly by. Levels 3 - 11 are slower. Levels 14+ go pretty quickly again. I do use XP and our group gets most of its XP from defeating foes. 1st to...

D&D General How many hours of D&D would you say you have played in your entire life?

Over the last 46 years I have logged 8,763 hours of D&D and counting. Just kidding - I have no idea of how many hours. Let's leave it at a lot!

    D&D General Critical Role Ending

I doubt I watch any of this, but of course I am not the audience for streamed games anyway. What I'm continually amazed by is the rabid fan-base of critical role. Rabid is probably too negative of a word, but I mean they are beyond devoted. Many of the folks in the comments sections of these...

D&D General Did you get your start playing D&D, and what do you play now?

For folks my age and older who started as kids we had to start with D&D because that's all there was for a window of time in the mid 1970s. We tried lots of other games as they came out - Traveller, Runequest, Gamma World, Boothill, Gangbusters, CoC, etc., but always came back to D&D for our...

    D&D Movie/TV Check Out Hugh Grant's D&D Movie Costume!

I'm getting a Mr. Roper vibe from this.

D&D General Do players REALLY care about the game world?

I think you are going to get a skewed response here because folks who post are really into the game and most of us are at least part time DMs. IMO players care only as far as the campaign lore directly effects them. For the most part, players do not care. I have one player out of my regular six...

D&D 5E Is 5e's Success Actually Bad for Other Games?

I don't think it is bad 5e is dominant. A lot of folks playing D&D would not be playing RPGs if it were not for 5e. Taking away D&D would not open up the market - it would constrict the market.

Do you look at updates before pledging on a Kickstarter?

I do look at updates before pledging. The updates that make me back out are when the KS adds bonuses to the campaign seemingly at the suggestions of backers. Example: If I see you have added a miniatures to the campaign and you have never made miniatures before - I'm probably out. If you add a...

Greatest Campaign Adventures for Sci-fi - looking for suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions! The Pirates of Drinax stuff was available as a Bundle of Holding as were the rules -so I bought the whole thing. Looking forward to reading it. Have not played Traveller since the 1980s!

Greatest Campaign Adventures for Sci-fi - looking for suggestions

I think of certain campaign adventures as so great it is worth learning the system just to play and experience them - examples for me include: The Enemy Within for WFRP Masks of Nyarlathotep for Call of Cthulhu The Great Pendragon Campaign Is there a great adventure campaign in the sci-fi...

    Anyone headed to GenCon 2021?

Me too. I am going to a historical Wargames swap meet today, but that will mostly be an extended shopping trip. I just got my home game going again in-person - I'm not ready to jump back into conventions.

Critical Role Critical Role’s 7-hour Campaign Finale

Hope they have an enjoyable campaign climax that is satisfying to all concerned. Interesting that they already know the session is going to take 7 hours.

Worlds of Design: WANTED - More Game Masters

I am a forever GM who plays on occasion just to get on the other side of the screen from time-to-time for perspective. I play to improve my GMing. I'm going to paint with a broad brush a bit here - solid players who show up every week on time, are decent human beings, and value everyone's time...

Evil protagonists from fiction - or 'Examples of how to play the bad guy without being a total jerk'

I thought Al Swearengen was the protagonist of the movie, and arguably the last season of DW.

    D&D General Anyone Co-DM'd a Session?

I have done it, but not for D&D. We had a Space 1889 game with three game masters back in the day. The lead guy gave the rest of us direction - so we were really more assistants.

D&D 5E How the game changes when a DM starts to target downed PC's?

I think you can get some of the benefits of play you mentioned by keeping death saving throws secret. I do use hitting 'em when they are down particularly with villains I want the PCs to really HATE.

D&D 5E What most needs revision for the (hypothetical) 50th anniversary core books?

I think the game must be in decent shape, because there is very little consensus on what needs changing - pretty much everything comes down to personal tastes. Speaking of which - I would like to see a few spells revised like forcecage, wall of force, and true polymorph. I agree that despite...
