I've done it by intentionally making it so the PCs don't have a choice but to overextend themselves, but its not common in my games, by any means. If you keep track of approximate adventuring day XP, though, you can compensate for such things.

Yep, that was me. Its been....forever....since I played Magic. Like, there was only one set when I played regularly. I had the bloody starter box, too. I guess I can thank hurricanes for ruining those for me. On the other hand, I've been DMing basically every week since 2006.
