I'm of the general opinion that if it's something available in the core rule book (for D&D the PHB) then it should generally be allowed. Of course there may be situations where it doesn't make sense, but in general I'm not looking to play a humans only D&D world.

I would be interested in seeing what the designer of The One Ring rpg would come up with if he was developing a Star Wars system.

You'd have less of the take a 1 level dip type stuff if multi-classing was permanent and starting at first class. Essentially how it worked in older versions of D&D. You can have a multi-class character, you just split XP between the classes as you level.

I ran a short campaign (26 or so 3 hour sessions) from levels 1-6 using only the PHB, MM, and DMG.

Regarding the long rest issue, you can tie spell recovery to the moon or sun so that it is no longer dependent on taking a long rest. Just say that recovery happens at sunrise, sunset, moon rise, etc.

I would love to see them take the original box set and supplements and give them the 3rd Edition campaign hardback treatment.
