D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

No I'm not. I am not comparing cancer and D&D. I am comparing the logic behind the arguments. "I did not experience a problem with X. Therefore I see no reason to change X" That's the statement with which I am taking issue. The issue is the same no matter what X is. It can be "linear...

D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

wrecan: Similarly, when people talk about linear fighters/quadratic wizards (LFQW), what is the point of saying "Well I never experienced that problem"? Beginning of the End: So the analogy is not "my grandfather smoked for 70 years, therefore smoking cigarettes isn't a problem". I have no...

D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

No. I am comparing arguments made in antismoking debates to arguments made in edition wars. I am not analogizing smoking itself to gaming i any fashion. No. I made no statement as to why one person may or may not have a specific problem witht he game. I am making an analogy about arguments...

D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

Well, maybe's it's an inherent inclarity in the English language, but "saw no need" would mean you don't even acknowledge that others did have complaints. Again, that's why such statements sound like they deny the problem exists or is genuine for anyone. I never had a problem with THAC0, but I...

Queen of the Demonweb Pits - what's so bad?

With regard to the genre mixing, keep in mind that at the time, the game presumed a certain level of genre-mixing. The AD&D DMG had rules for converting to Gamma World and Boot Hill and mentioned Metamorphosis Alpha. Also why Gygax introduced Murlynd as a wild west gunslinger-turned-demigod...

D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

I actually have no idea what point people who say "Well I had no problem with it" are trying to make. To use an analogy, which I usually try to avoid, it's like people who say "Well my grandfather smoked for 70 years and he never got cancer." Is the person saying he doesn't think smoking...

    AD&D Publication Timeline -- weird

Keep in mind that TSR wasn't really what you would call professionals yet. most of what they published was the stuff they had already run for their campaigns or created for conventions. The S and C series were all stuff written for cons, that they then published to keep bringing in income to...

D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

Yes. morrus posted on this thread that he doesn't think it was a 5e announcement that got canceled. Either he misunderstood the rumor his contact gave him, or his contact miscommunicated something. Which should have ended the thread, except the Edition Wars will not be denied.

What did you do when Gary Gygax died, ingame?

In the session after EGG died, the heroes in my regular campaign liberated a city and were appointed its new guardians. The city had been named after its now deposed tyrant, so the PCs decided to rename the city. (Something I hadn't even expected they would do.) They renamed it the City of Gygax.

Queen of the Demonweb Pits - what's so bad?

How can anyone hate the Demonweb Pits. It has the Abed stamp of Community approval! I always loved that map.

    Rob Kuntz Interview @ HillCantons

Yep. It seems that the Golden Age of D&D was 1974 to 1978.

Your favorite sword from D&D lore

Wait. I changed my mind. My favorite fantasy sword is Lula from Dave the Barbarian, which I am certain is inspired by D&D.

    Is D&D an illusion?

Yes, it's an illusion. The better questions is, is it glamer, figment, pattern phantasm, or shadow?

Did the Brits do it better?

I thought Dragon Magazine, but I was wrong. The gith were first prsented in White Dwarf mag (UK) and then Fiend Folio. So I was wrong

Did the Brits do it better?

The Saltmarsh series was really good. I thought Crystal Cave was whimsically fun, but badly designed. (You couldn't get into the adventure unless your cleric or wizard had memorized the right spell, which he had no reason to think to memorize.) Sentinel and Gauntlet were okay, but I think...

Best old style AD&D dungeon crawlers ever

Okay. Given these criteria, I'll recommend the following, in order of preference: A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity. A great compelling and heroic story, with fantastic traps, really fun battles, and a great theme. And if you like it, run the whole series. While this isn't my favorite module...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

There has yet to be an edition of D&D in which it is assumed that a 1st level hero cannot swim. This has nothing to do with 4e. As I said, in 2e, the Swimming Nonweapon Proficiency merely improved your swimming. You didn't need it to swim. AD&D didn't have any skill rules (though i beleive...

Your favorite sword from D&D lore

Blackrazor comes a close second to the Spellcutter, a sword that allowed the wielder to destroy any spell cast at him with a successful attack roll.

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Okay. But the game doesn't need to set a default for NPCs. The DM is going to give the NPCs the skills appropriate for them. The game only has to concern itself for a default set of skills for PCs. The DM can decide the villagers of the landlocked village with the shallow stream cannot swim...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Just for clarification, since you quoted Stomonu and me, I did nto suggest the players voluntarily relinquish their swimming ability. i suggested that the default be that PCs could swim, but the DM could decide that in his ampaign world, the default is they cannot. I really don't think we need...
