Alternative HP systems and other altered d20 mechanics

First of all, it would be multiplied by Constitution (not Strength), but I see your point and have been thinking about it as well. You could never have Hit Points less than your Constitution score. Meaning, everybody with a 13 or lower Constitution has a Hit Point total equal to their...

Alternative HP systems and other altered d20 mechanics

There's the rub. What I am personally aiming for is logic and elegance. The two can shake hands seamlessly. It just requires more work. If you have any ideas on how to make the submitted ideas more elegant, without throwing them out altogether, please offer those ideas up. Because just telling...

Alternative HP systems and other altered d20 mechanics

Okay, I've had all day to think about this. Hit Points: Weight / 25 (rounded up) = Base Weight Modifier. I.E. 180 lbs. / 25 = 8. Base Weight Modifier x Constitution bonus = Hit Points. I.E. If your Constitution is 16 then... 8 x 3 = 24. Strength bonus equals damage reduction. I.E. If your...

    The (quintessential) paladin prestige class

You noticed! I assure you friend, no elitism is intended here, but I do intend for the paladin prestige class to be pursued only by those of a certain mental competence. An Intelligence attribute of 13 is certainly an above average standard, but by no means genius level. Paladins shouldn't be...

Alternative HP systems and other altered d20 mechanics

Yes. Third edition as a necessary transition to a more logical system. The immediate snag I foresee with this system (regardless of the equation) is that Dungeons and Dragons will become permeated with cloned characters who all have the same "golden mean" weight for their race. The perfect...

Alternative HP systems and other altered d20 mechanics

Upper_Krust. Okay, I've read the whole thread now (all 5 pages) and I really think that your ideas have merit. I commend your stalwart devotion to pursuing a *universally scalable* rule system that uses logic as the initial foundation and then "stylizes" those rules for simplicity. I love the...

    The (quintessential) paladin prestige class

You said it Lily. Power gaming is usually reason number one for playing either class. Role-playing frequently falls by the way-side.

    The (quintessential) paladin prestige class

Underpowered? The paladin prestige class (as presented above) is comparable to the blackguard in power, if not a small amount stronger. As for individuals who truly understand what it means to be a paladin, well… I have yet to meet one in my 20 years of role-playing experience.

    The (quintessential) paladin prestige class

INSERT Page 86 of the DUNGEON MASTER's Guide, between the loremaster and the shadowdancer. Paladin Every description in the Player's Handbook between pages 41 and 44 holds sway, except where indicated below. No one ever chooses to be a paladin. Becoming a paladin is answering a call, accepting...

    The (quintessential) paladin prestige class

I have yet to meet a single person who can accurately role-play a paladin (although I am still open to being pleasantly surprised). Even if one such individual did emerge head and shoulders above all others, it would not change the fact that a vast majority of Dungeons and Dragons players, who I...

Do you get an AoO when denied your Dexterity bonus?

I thought AoOs were only prohibited if your character is "flatfooted" (which isn't the only way to lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class)...

Do you get an AoO when denied your Dexterity bonus?

I am not sure about this particular rule. Can anybody cite a book and page number in which this was covered? My search has come up with nothing.

A plea for the Chold Hold and Earth's Embrace feats...

Thanks. I suppose paraphrased is the best I can ask for. :)

A plea for the Chold Hold and Earth's Embrace feats...

There is every reason not to buy that book, except for the a few skant "general" feats. You obviously enjoy the Oriental Adventures book, but it contains very little universal source material and a surprisingly disappointing martial arts system (no, a bunch of feats do not make a universal...

A plea for the Chold Hold and Earth's Embrace feats...

Would anybody be so kind as to post these two feats for me out of their copy of Oriental Adventures? I'm asking really nicely because I need the verbatim description (not an abridged version). Pleeeeeeeeeaze.

Looking for a good house rule to throw objects/people...

I once read a rule mechanic that Skip Williams (or was it Monte Cook?) created ad hoc to adjudicate "how far" a character could throw somebody else. Well that's what I'm after. A good house rule for this purpose. I'll be more than happy to read anything you got. Thanks.
