It took me took me about 6 hours to get the map where I wanted it. I've been working on different map techniques for over a year. My blog has the progression.

I created the City of Heirandos map using Paint Shop Pro. It uses raster and vector layers like Photo Shop and is fairly inexpensive. ;)

I went to GenCon in 2007 and almost made that mistake as well. I pre-paid and had my 4 day pass FedEx'ed to me. I got there at 10am on Thursday and the line was halfway around the convention center. Thankfully, I asked the guy in front of me about the line. He saw my pass and laughed and pointed...
