Atypical Clerics and Wizards who like versatility

Could you give us an example of something that suggests that 4e will attempt to discourage evil characters Nightchilde-2?

    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

I agree with Engilbrand. Roll one set of stats, used by the whole group, or use point buy. I don't want there to be a differential between the starting potential of the characters based on luck.

    I Really Like Keywords

The roles aren't keywords, they're descriptors. A keyword is, at least in a Magic sense, a compressed rules concept reused throughout the text. For instance, the weapons article uses many keywords for weapon abilities. Calling some one a defender describes their role in combat, but is not...

D&D 4E Will the 4E classes be deliberately unbalanced to get players to read?

I greatly dislike system mastery as a concept. The system should be set up so that however you flop your character they will be useful. I don't think perfect balance is possible, but you should strive for it. Out of game action (additional reading) should not produce in game disparities...

Warlock with Paladin Multiclass Feat grouped with Warrior

Well, at least that's a complete thought, as opposed to just a slur. And if having access to more options in combat limits rp, that's a problem restricted to your group. It certainly doesn't apply to mine. Indeed, if that's a problem you have, you should steer clear of 4e.

Warlock with Paladin Multiclass Feat grouped with Warrior

So what if it reminds you of Magic? The way you've put it, followed by your derogatory text, shows that your presenting nothing more than a dog whistle. Tell us what's wrong with a system which has a variety of powers which are meant to be used together and balanced under that presumption...

Warlock with Paladin Multiclass Feat grouped with Warrior

This is exactly the kind of interesting application of the rules that I encourage among my players. I don't understand why so many DMs respond to non-disruptive creativity amongst their players by changing the rules to make the creative act impossible.

D&D 4E Love It or Leave It: 4E Multiclassing

The article says that you can upgrade your trade in power at every level, so I'm afraid your not going to be happy Dice4hire.

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

I don't understand this obsession with an even split. It's not necessary for any concept that your power come exactly half from two different sources. And if it's not a concept issue, and not a balance issue, I'm not sure why anyone should care.

    What's your back-up game?

Unknown Armies. Pornomancy for the win.

    Why does WotC hate Macs?

They looked at the numbers and decided that they would lose money by offering Mac support. I can't believe that there are four pages on this.

Why does epic level play entail treating death as a "speed bump"?

Whose to say that these knew abilities aren't exactly that? They may very well be substitutes for death, rather than resurrections. In fact I find that to be far more likely, at least for the non divine classes.

    Roles are so LIMITING!

Yes, but the fighter strikes against AC, which will almost always be a harder roll than a roll versus one of the other three defenses.

    Factoring items into balance flawed?

You realize he's talking about Living Greyhawk, where the GMs have to play by RAW right, MisterWhodat?

    Squared FireBalls?

See, I feel exactly the opposite. I don't see why you'd bother with the huge rule book and everything else if you don't get the payoff of tactical combat. I mean, I can teach people the entirety of the Unknown Armies system, the enumerated magical schools aside, in 5 minutes, and I could run...

    Squared FireBalls?

    All my fault. Apologies.

Paladin's will still cast spells: Indirectly hinted at by Mearls.

But since smites are inherently magical, excluding paladins from the list of classes that don't use magic actually doesn't prove that they'll cast spells. This new information does not settle the issue.

    Squared FireBalls?

Haffrung - Given that, as I've said, the miniatures game of D&D combat is a subsystem of D&D in general, I find the idea that they have separate needs to be nonsensical. If your immersion can be broken by movement rules, I would not call what you have immersion. If you don't like the rule...

    Squared FireBalls?

ainatan - Why would you use an abstraction which you well know is for simplifying grid combat in a situation where it is entirely inappropriate? The number of things you hit with a fireball is only a rough approximation if you don't use a grid, so I doubt it will have any effect on play at all...

Use Magic Device: Keep or Kill?

Kill it. I don't think any of the things that made UMD such a powerful skill are likely to return in their current form. Given the importance of control of powers per combat to the balance of the new system, I expect to see staves, scrolls, and wands all neutered or changed into something else...
