The Campaign's DM has always been a big fan of randomly rolling treasure, so I think the rarity will be less of a concern than overall powerlevel. Of course this is the same DM that let my level 5 character find a, randomly rolled, +3 Shield and boots of flying, so anything may be fair game...

It's really to give the DM ideas for items we want, instead of rolling random items. The DM still decides when it's appropriate for us to get items of those power levels. It also prevents the party from ending up with random magic items no one wants or uses, which is possibly more "realistic"...

The only Pathfinder Adventure Path I've ever run has been Rise of the Rune Lords, but I honestly wouldn't sweat running it as is, using 5E monster stats, and adjusting difficulty numbers down to 5E levels on the fly.

Just wanted to compliment the OP on this thread. While I may not agree with everything, it's great to read guides like this and gleam new insights from other people's perspectives.

I've been reading 1E & 2E stuff for ideas to convert for 5E use, just like I did when I played 3E.

I think the FREE basic rules were a way to reassure people about the quality of the game, before they get invested in buying the books. I don't think it was ever intended as a way for a Dungeon Master to avoid buying the books altogether.
