    Treantmonk's Guides in one place

Hi everyone, my guides for 5E are now all available from one amaturish but functional website: Treantmonk's Temple Thanks!

D&D 5E Preserve Life (Life Domain Cleric Feature): do you like it?

We are in agreement, though once the Light Cleric gets fireball, wall of fire, etc, they have plenty of AOE blast options for tougher baddies and can use Channel Divinity to clear weak minions when friendly fire would be an issue. Radiance of the Dawn is strong when they need it to be. Yes...

D&D 5E Preserve Life (Life Domain Cleric Feature): do you like it?

30' radius is a massive AOE for a damage effect. More importantly though, it's a massive AOE that does not have friendly fire. Though, this ability REALLY shines at lower levels. At 2nd level, it's the best blast in the game by a pretty large margin. It isn't +3 to a skill. It's +3 to any...

D&D 5E Preserve Life (Life Domain Cleric Feature): do you like it?

I don't really agree with this, at least IMO. There are a lot of poor 2nd level channel divinity options, but the Knowledge, Light, Tempest and Trickery domains all have very potent channel divinity options, all of which I would put ahead of Preserve life. I agree with the ability being a bit...

    Treantmonk's Guide to character building

No, I'm selfish and am more motivated to do one's based on my own characters ;) That said, I do currently play a Hexblade 3/College of Swords Bard 7 in a campaign, and it is awesome. Has a flame tongue he assigns CHa to, a Bow as a pact weapon (improved pact weapon invocation), and has blade...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I guess you know the spell I almost took. It was a close call. I knew I would miss one. Thanks I'm not including any spells not gained by level up. Good chance the Wizard would have those spells, but I'm not assuming anything. I've switched them to 3rd level. I think when I read my own...

Yes, it's about player effort, not ability.

    5e rogue importance?

It never was, but locks were not always easy, nor do I suspect, were they intended to be. Not that Gary Gygax or Dave Arneson are around to ask, but I played 1e, 2e and Basic, and locks were a significant challenge (Rogues had a very low chance to pick locks at all but high level, and nobody...

    Willful Disadvantage

Advantage and Disadvantage are something a DM can arbitrate at need. If a player roleplays a deception check in a way that would suggest to me that the deception would be easier to discern, I would absolutely impose disadvantage. Alternatively, if the deception was roleplayed convincingly, I...

    5e rogue importance?

yes. The referenced rule is in the DMG and reads: Edit: I should also add that if you don't have proficiency in Thieves tools and have a +1 ability score, you can still succeed at DC 25 locks using 10x time as long as a guidance cantrip is available. Locks are so easy...

    5e rogue importance?

Yes, Knock is really only for those impossible locks. I wouldn't waste the slot or risk the noise for just any old lock. The point was that Rogues are far from the best at opening locks. Honestly, in most campaigns, you won't need Knock or a Rogue to open any lock you need to.

    5e rogue importance?

Rogues are no longer an essential part of a party in 5e. The same is true of other previously thought "essential" classes as well (like the Cleric for example). Previous editions provided Rogues/Thieves with unique abilities to find traps, stealth, and opening locks. None of these abilities...

    Celestial Patron Warlock, Blade Pact

OK. So I should say that you aren't going to get everything you want. There is no such thing as a single classed celestial Warlock blade pact that uses 2 handed weapons, and is durable. Personally, I would prioritize durable here, which means a multiclass. Honestly, for straight mechanical...
