    THAC0

The first place I remember seeing it was in one of the UK modules and I adopted it right away, since I found (and still find) looking at a table onerous. Before that I was more likely to guess if a number was a hit as a DM then look at the actual chart.

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

I (re-) did the math for one of my current D&D5E campaigns, and the party has advanced on average every 8 sessions. They are currently 6th level and we've played 56 sessions. The longest period of time between leveling was 20 sessions (so just shy of two years of real time).

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

Thanks for explaining. I have to admit I have a hard time with this concept too. I tend to think we are not “wasting time” as long as we are having fun and feeling immersed in the world and campaign events.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by “meaningful?”

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

Rogue Every town or city has its share of rogues. Most of them live up to the worst stereotypes of the class, making a living as burglars, assassins, cutpurses, and con artists. Often, these scoundrels are organized into thieves' guilds or crime families. Plenty of rogues operate independently...

Ranger Wilderness warrior, monster hunter, civilization defender, nature guardian, bounty-hunter, animal friend, and ecology preserver. Rangers can be any, some, or all of these things. And, regardless of whichever of these paths they happen to be following, they feel most at home in the rough...

Paladin Paladins are united by the vows they make in the name of one of the 13 Gods to uphold an oath. The origins and motives of this vow are their own, but the force of it binds them and manifests as divine power to be used in pursuit of that oath’s promises. Paladins train to learn the...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

Amazingly, I think I kind of run this kind of thing like @Reynard is describing - though I have no hard and fast rules about it, it is a case by case basis. I think the question is, is the character trying to recall information based on objective fact divorced from their experience of hearing...

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

Today I am working on rewriting the Hallow spell (and creating its opposite Desecrate) to be a lower level spell (probably won't have the add on effect), since I am adding a bunch of effects in the game that are best removed or recovered from by casting certain spells (like healing or...

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

This is a tangent. But I really don’t like the “camera” analogy or thinking of D&D as a movie or TV show with those kind of beats. In fact, what I like about playing D&D (and many, but not all RPGs) is how it can subvert the expectations of narrative and character through randomness and player...

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

If you are playing with XP, the DM decides when he awards XP (for example, I award it between adventures or during other downtime). This means PCs advance in level as fast or as slow as makes sense for the setting, the narrative, and your tastes. For me the question is not how many sessions...

Monk Monks use rigorous combat training, mental discipline, and meditation in an effort to perfect the relationship of their mind and body in such a way to achieve supernatural feats beyond that which mortals are usually capable of without magic. This resolve manifests as striking displays of...

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

Mage Mages are mortals with a bit of innate arcane magic they have learned to access and shape, and who, with time and experience, can follow an arcane tradition that expands and empowers what they are capable of by accessing that arcane power through different means. That said, most mages do...

Fighter Fighters are found on any battlefield. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, salty marines, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it...

    D&D 3.x Still playing 3e? Share your 3.0 and/or 3.5 house rules

I don't have a PDF, all I have are wiki files that are messy to read. We moved to the wiki format because the 3.xE rules were so expansive we were constantly having to update things we ran into for the first time or not notice an issue with until after we'd been playing 3 years, or whatever...

    D&D 3.x Still playing 3e? Share your 3.0 and/or 3.5 house rules

I ran what I liked to call 3.xE. It was 3.0 with stuff from 3,5 I liked and a houseruled compromise between 3.0 and 3.5 when we liked that better. Ultimately, we houseruled the rules to emulate the homebrew setting we’d already been playing in using 2E rules since 1989, so caveat about our...

    D&D 5E (2024) Just DMed my 1st session of 5.5. Healer's Kit!?!?!

This is actually more generous than my current system (which admittedly is a test version, so it could change) but I like it and may implement it. 👍🏾

    D&D 5E (2024) Just DMed my 1st session of 5.5. Healer's Kit!?!?!

Well, the sentiment, if not the specific details. 😉😂😇 That’s one way to do it. That’s up to a character to decide. But both PCs and antagonists will use actions in combat to down a potion if necessary. I usually see it happen every other combat or so. Honestly, I think drinking a potion...
