I've been one of those to say "DND will never be surpassed regardless, it's the rock!" But it was pointed out to me that during the 4e era, Pathfinder actually did outperform DnD. I think dndbeyond is a scary thing to overcome, though.

Yeah using dex for hit AND damage with finesse weapons was definitely an early version of it.
