    Neil Gaiman: Badly Overated?

I wouldn't say he's a comics writer first and a prose writer second. I'd say he's a short fiction writer first and a novelist second. I adore his short written works - his short stories, Stardust, Coraline, and his comics. Even the Sandman was more of a collection of short stories than a...

The Great Stat-Card Project: (UPDATED 8/9) 3rd level summoning spells

How's the progress coming on #4? I'm eagerly looking forward to the rest.

Sean Reynolds' new company press release

They all have very good flavor, and a great examples of setting writing, but are not good books for game mechanics. The FRCS in particular is loaded with extremely unbalanced feats and prestige classes. The 3.0 archmage, red wizard, incantatrix, persistent spell metamagic, and the spellcasting...

    [October] What Are You Reading?

About half way through Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay. After that, I have about a dozen books on my 'to read' pile.

    Awaiting with Excitment for...?

More than anything else, Ars Magica 5th edition. Otherwise: Arcana Evolved Sharn, City of Towers Beyond Countless Doorways (dead tree edition) Complete Arcane (though it's more morbid curiosity about whether it'll be as bad as Complete Divine, than it is actual desire. I really really want it...

[NJ, DE, PA and beyond] Southern Exposure [ENworld get-together]

Since 5:00 falls in the middle of the 3-8 block, why don't we meet earlier in the block? That would give us some extra time to hang out or play games, and wouldn't eat into other time since we wouldn't be gaming in the 3-8 block anyway.

    [Complexity] Rate the Core Classes

I would definitely rate the Druid a 4. Not only do they have lots of choices to make during character creation and while preparing spells, but they have to manage the differnt forms they can wildshape into, and know enough about all the creatures they can spontaneously summon. Probably the...

20 D&D products in 2004; what did you buy?

Complete Arcane - Likely will buy, if it's better quality than Complete Divine Eberron Campaign Setting - Bought it immediately. Expanded Psionics Handbook - Bought it, currently playing an Erudite. Sharn: City of Towers - Will almost certainly buy it. Shining South - Maybe. I'll take a look at...

Psychic and Psion in use: experiences?

I'm currently playing a 4th level Erudite. Overall, its very well balanced. From levels 1-3 he was more powerful than an equivalent level Wizard, but that's more because Wizards are so weak at low levels. He was quite well balanced with the other characters in the party.

    Other uses for class abilities

The allies of Paladins with Aura of Courage are more likely to insult other characters, end up in bar brawls, and bite off more danger than they can handle. Level 7+ barbarians never need to worry about cutting themselves shaving.

A d20 campaign parallel to a certain unnamed Palladium game

I would recommend using Mutants and Masterminds or d20 BESM rather than d20 modern/future. The *cough* world is extremely diverse and anything goes, and M&M and BESM both allow you to design anything and make conversions quickly.

    Monte Cook and Tracy Hickman

IIRC it was after 3e came out, so it's probably in the 280s. Essentially, Hickman wrote an article criticizing the ultra-cautious play style, where players do nothing spontaneous, carefully check every single door and 10' square of dungeon before proceeding, and basically do everything they can...

I'll be there, and for the whole weekend, not just one day like last year.

    Ranma & gender issues

We've had characters change themselves into forms of the opposite sex, through polymorph and other forms of shapechanging. But it's never been forced by the GM, unless you count one instance of a character becoming stuck in an opposite sex form he changed into.

    Arcane Trickster (3e) any good?

That's only in 3.0 though. There aren't any exclusive skills in 3.5. As others have said, they're not great as firepower, though the Practiced Spellcaster feat from Complete Divine goes a long way to improving that. That feat is a must-have for ATs. It doesn't overpower them, just put them...

Which 'Campaign Classics' would you buy?

I'd buy Birthright, Planescape, Spelljammer, and Taladas.
