    Arcane Hierophant

More likely, using it with rangers instead of druids is so utterly suboptimal that no one's ever bothered trying to make one. ;) It's great for druid/wizards, not so much for ranger/wizards.

Mutants and Masterminds - limited copies available!

If the book states that, then maybe an errata, FAQ clarification, or house rule suggestion is in order. The general rule of M&M seems to be that no attack can provoke two of the same type of saving throw, and this contradicts that rule. I suppose that you could treat such an attack like a...

So does that mean that Aura powers don't also attack when the character makes a melee attack? For example, if a character with Str 30 and Strike Aura 10 punches a villain, does the villain have to save against both the punch damage and the aura damage separately?

A question about this wonderful book: Iron Heroes

The cover price is $37.99. At Amazon you'd pay about $25. I've never seen it in B&N or Borders.

Want to recommend a book, or a series of books?

I'll third Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos books. They're a lot of fun, and an interesting and internally-consistent take on a high magic world. The smartass internal dialogue between Vlad and his familiar Loiosh alone are worth it, even without the great plots, dramatic action, and style. Best of...

    [Aug] What Are You Reading?

I finished Light by M. John Harrison last week, as well as a couple of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories (A Scandal in Bohemia and The Red-Headed League). I'm about a chapter into Inamorata, by Joseph Gangemi, about spiritualism in the 1920's, but anticipation for Shadowrun has...

Attacks of Opportunity are ruining D&D!!

Attacks of opportunity killed me and took my stuff. Now I'm dead and have no stuff. :(

    Law school?

I'm currently half way through law school. I'm also doing it simultaneously with a doctorate in psychology, so my experience may be a bit atypical, but the basics of law school are the same. First of all, for admissions the LSAT is all important. A good LSAT will give you a better chance to...

Southern Exposure (PA, DE, NJ) ENworld Gathering! [9/29-10/2]

The last two were lots of fun, and I'd be interested in getting together again. This year I'll even be able to come for the whole con, not just a day or two. If we're going to have an ENWorld game session like two years ago, we should probably schedule it in advance, so people don't have to...

Seven Essential Books (change your answers)

This is surprisingly tough. AE and M&M were easy choices, but it was tough to narrow down the other two. Arcana Evolved Mutants & Masterminds 2e Savage Worlds Ars Magica If I didn't have to take the D&D core rulebooks, I'd ditch the PH and DMG, and take Iron Heroes and the AE Spell Treasury...

Mutants and Masterminds - limited copies available!

I can't comment on Evasion because I don't have the book yet, but Steve has commented that the Uncanny Dodge feat in M&M is dependent on one of your senses. So, if a character has uncanny dodge based on hearing, and a completely silent character ambushes him, his uncanny dodge doesn't work...

    Gentlemen Magicians

The Mysteries, for ars magica, is probably the single best book you can get for magical mystery cults, secret societies, and hidden magical secrets that only the most trusted will be initiated into. I don't know if I would use the Ars Magica system for your game, since its magic is very...

Ultimate Rifts. Improvement or Same Old Stuff?

I think I'll pass on this book, in favor of the more balanced Rifts rulebook that's also coming out this fall. Granted, that one doesn't have any setting information, and is labeled "Mutants and Masterminds 2nd edition", but it has all the rules I need to run a smooth Rifts game. :D

D&D 4E What would you want to see in 4e?

I wouldn't disagree with that. Iron Heroes 2.0 (with better class names) combined with Arcana Evolved magic system 2.0 and fully integrated conversions of the more archetypal D&D classes (cleric, druid, bard, paladin) would be great. Then throw in a handful of flavorful magic items, which give...

D&D 4E What would you want to see in 4e?

Make multiclassing spellcasters viable in the core mechanic. Spellcasting should stack, and caster/noncaster combos shouldn't be viable without feat and PrC patches. Get rid of spell preparation, replacing it with a system like AE's where you ready a number of spells per level, and then cast...

Mutants and Masterminds - limited copies available!

I don't have the book yet, but everything that's been released about it in previews and spoilers make the answer a resounding "Yes." The addition of reasonable costs for skill ranks, detailed rules for casual equipment, devices, and impromptu inventions created by tinkerers, and overall better...

    Savage Worlds Quibbles...am I correct?

Your third complaint solves your second complaint. ;) If you play SW like D&D ("Roll to hit, roll to damage. Roll to hit, roll to damage") then you'll have a hard time hurting many things. But if you use all the various maneuvers, combat is much more interesting, and it becomes possible to...

    OGL? SUccess or failure?

I doub't such a thing would be completely free, but there are several fee structures that would make it still viable for publishers. One way to cut down on the application workload would be to set an application fee, to pay the reviewers and ensure that only publishers serious about their work...

    Notes from Green Ronin seminar

Talking about whether or not 4e will be OGL misses the point, IMO. Even if it's completely open, and a 4e SRD is released to publishers in advance of the street date of the 4e PHB, it's still risky for publishers to spend resources on d20 "D&D supplements." After all, 3.5 was completely open...
