D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

Who are hunting and killing commoners? They're hunting 4 hp humanoids with a 10 AC. Put 1 orc against 4 commoners and run the combat with the orc attacking the 4 commoners that are sitting around a campfire. The orc will rip them apart if run marginally effectively.

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

It was not cowardice - it was the intent of the design. It was intellectual, not emotional.

    D&D 5E (2014) Forge of Fury TFTYP?

Many of us have... it is part of the Tales of the Yawning Portal collection, and that is popular. For my part, it is my favorite low level adventure. I usually run my own homebrew, but for nearly 25 years I have had a binder on my shelves that has everything I need to run both of these...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

4E is EXTREMELY efficient, stable and balanced. This is, however, not better. There was a lot of criticism about how monotone it was and how every class was substantially similar in design, and so many powers were essentially reskins of each other because the constraints of the system left...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

This isn't really a problem around minionizing - it exists without the 4E minion rules as well. If your PCs step into a cavern and see 8 5E goblins, how do they know which are goblins, goblin commoners, goblin bosses, goblin psi brawlers, etc...? The DM drops hints, but I've missed clues that...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

I suggested what now? They've evolved the underlying structure of the game. The math works better in 5E than in any prior edition. That evolution recognized and balanced several factors. I don't even consider it a matter of opinion to say that 5E is the best rule and design edition we've...

D&D General Hit Points. Did 3.0 Or 3.5 Get it Right?

So - rather than have the monsters have 60 hit points and the PCs deal 15 per strike, you'd prefer the PCs deal 10 per strike and the monsters have 40 hit points? That is going to turn out to be essentially the same situation. Either way you need 4 hits to take a foe down. This is...

    D&D 5E (2014) High DPR Paladin-Rogue-Bard Will it work?

This has all been becried many times, but: 1.) Being able to focus your attack bonus is still significant - even with often attacking with advantage and elven accuracy. The advantage is never as guaranteed as we think, and there are high AC foes where that +2 to hit matters. It is especially...

D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote Lost Mine of Phandelver?

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

When all else fails, steal. The first adventure I run for a new group in my primary homebrew steals a huge amount of design from Babylon 5. Not so much that the PCs get a blueprint on how to win out, but enough that you can see the weaving. However, the first five levels have a lot in common...

    D&D 5E (2014) High DPR Paladin-Rogue-Bard Will it work?

If you like the idea, then it is good. D&D in 5E is balanced enough that you kind of need to try to go wrong. The idea of the stealth paladin is a fun one - with the Avenger from 4E as a good example. From an efficiency standpoint, your biggest 'hole' in your game is the reliance on a single...

Did the Ads Recently Change on this Site (New Pop Ups)

The experience right now is akin to accidentally visiting one of those scam sites with as many pop ups as they can muster. I know there is a need to use advertisements to offset costs, but we're going to see people driven away in large numbers if this persists. Having to click to close...

    D&D General Gothic horror class

It depends upon what aspect of gothic horror you want to embody. Here are 5 options that cover a spectrum: Undead Warlock 1 / Moon Druid to 19: Combining Form of Dread and Moon Druid shapes can create horrific monsters. Way of Long Death Monk - This is a nice balance of the tranquility of the...

D&D General WizKids Announced Details for 50th Anniversary Icons of the Realms Miniature Set

Do they really wish to undercut sales of their expensive $80 versions of these minis? I don't think this is it, but I could see all 10 being interpretations of famous NPCs that use famous D&D people from the last 50 years as inspiration. Gary Gygax as Mordenkainen, Dave Arneson as "The...

    D&D General Ranger Tank Armor

You do not need to do anything. They'll figure it out. Let them express interest in what they want to do, then figure out how you want to support it, but don't feel a need to play the game for them by deciding what they need to survive your game. As a DM, I feel we're best off facilitating...

D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

Fair enough - although this isn't really an elitist / class thing. My arguments could just as easily have come from someone from any background. It addressed the massive change in tone from thoughtful and crafted to tawdry and exploitative. It isn't like the 'high class' don't do tawdry and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Eldritch Strike rules question

This depends upon whether you read it as "before the end of your next turn" modifying "a spell you cast" or "on the next saving throw it makes" or "on the next saving throw it makes against a spell you cast" collectively. It can be read either way. For example, if we replaced "a spell you...

It also is not this. This, itself, is a Palworld is a parady of Pokemon. Again, you're entirely missing my point. Reread my last response and consider it if you'd like to understand how.

ToV Tales of the Valiant - Goblin Lineage

I would quibble with the idea that splitting the community into several different games benefits WotC. While the haphazard and confusing misalignment between the competitors gives WotC a competitive advantage against them, I'm sure they'd much rather not having sections of the community...
