D&D 5E (2024) Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth? - Languages in 2024

At tables I've played, changing languages so NPCs don't know what you're saying is 99% of the reason PCs learn niche languages. Overcoming language barriers is usually a non-issue, given the existence of Comprehend Languages.

D&D General Quick Background House Rule

I like this better than what they went with in the new PHB.

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

"TL;DR" as a Design Principal In previous posts, I’ve mentioned the large amount of content I’m including in the sourcebook I'm writing. At the same time, I want the book to include something of value to players who don’t have the time or the inclination to do a deep dive into setting lore...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gracklstugh

According to the 2e supplement Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark: Gracklstugh "begrudgingly" admits visitors, but visitors are restricted to the Darklake District. At least two businesses in the Darklake District (a tavern and an inn) specifically cater to surface worlders. Maps depict...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

I honestly can't tell anymore. That's how confused I'm getting by this slow trickle of information about the rules.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Do we know for sure the Invisible condition grants (natural language) concealment? I shouldn't have to ask a question as ridiculous as what I'm about to type, yet here it is: Does "Concealed" (capitalized) mean the same as "concealed" (not capitalized)? The Invisible condition mentions a...

    D&D 5E (2024) I just got a 2024 PHB From Gen Con. AMA!

I worried this would be the case as soon as we discovered that the Wayfarer Background is defined as something completely unrelated to being a traveler. The designers seem to be redefining a fair number of English-language words to mean whatever vaguely-related things they want them to mean...

    D&D 5E (2024) I just got a 2024 PHB From Gen Con. AMA!

Agreed. These grapple rules seem needlessly convoluted. On a related note: @DavyGreenwind What's the wording for the goliath's Powerful Build feature?

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Slight tangent: I don't think Shove requires you to push the target directly away from you. So it sounds like you could use your Reaction to Shove an ally who leaves your space 5 feet straight up (in addition to any other vertical distance they get if they're jumping at the time). Under the...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Agreed. I just wish these rules were written in such a way that the door wasn't even left open to the nonsensical outcomes I'm seeing mentioned in this thread. There's such as thing as being too concise when describing a rule, and I think that's what's happened here.

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

Well, that's definitely one way to find the NPC. But there are posters in this thread arguing the rules imply you can also find the hidden NPC simply by establishing line of sight to them, so some clarification in the player-facing rules would have been nice.

    D&D 5E (2024) Influence Action

I'm not sure I understand the argument that these rules don't take the fiction into account and don't require strategy. The rules literally say you can't convince someone to do something against their alignment. To convince someone to do something, you have to suss out their alignment and then...

What happens when an NPC is hiding from you? What exactly can you do to find the NPC?

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

Some Background Information The first 3,000 copies of the revised Player’s Handbook went on sale a few days before I wrote this post. Like many people, I don’t yet have a copy of my own. Nevertheless, I’ve learned enough from online discussions of the book to realize one thing: the new...

WotC WotC Removes Digital Content Team Credits From D&D Beyond

I'm a little confused, as well. I know freelancers depend solely upon the credits they get in individual projects, but it doesn't sound like any of the people affected by this incident were freelancers. I've never had the privilege of working as a full-time employee at an industry-leading game...

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

There's difference between picking a pre-made background and picking options to create a custom background: the pre-made background is packaged with a default backstory, whereas the options selected when making a custom background aren't restricted to any particular story. I don't care if...

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

If the 2024 PHB doesn't explain things to new players at my table to my satisfaction, I'm not going to use the 2024 PHB. I'm going to use a starter set of my own design. I play in person only, so I'm not restricted to using official rules that interface with DDB.

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone going to use the new 2024 backgrounds?

See, this is the exact reason I dislike the designers' decision to move the custom background rules to the DMG. I'm a DM. I to want to be able to point new players at my table to a player-facing rule that encourages them to create interesting, engaging backstories. I don't want to game with...
