Are These Ideas A Sack of Rats?

Perhaps not a sack of rats, but a sack of something, definitely.

What D&Disms have you never liked?

"I hate how it's always the same old races except for the new ones, which I hate!"

    Why is 4E so grindy?

Yeah, when building your party, fulfil the roles of tank and healer, then just beeline for damage. People like doing damage. When in doubt, add barbarians. I love those guys - they're like the brutes of the PC side. They do tons of damage, but are easy to hit! Perfect!

Players dissatisfied with level of danger in 4e

I don't get what's so hard about "increase the difficulty of the encounters slowly until you reach a danger point that satisfies you". Haven't we been doing this for three editions already? Being imaginative or clever about your encounters is great, but it really just comes down to: "Encounters...

    Using traps in 4e

I found the trap room in Keep on the Shadowfell to be pretty poor - a lot of extremely obviously trapped statues with very limited range, and a magic javelin, and that was the end of that. The players just stood off and shot them all to bits. I can't believe the playtesters never caught that...

    Brawler Style "Empty Hand" Definition

So, what's the best way to build a "standard" brawler fighter? Bastard sword in the right, spiked gauntlet in the left?

What D&Disms have you never liked?

Thing is, armour class is extremely elegant in its simplicity. What's the goal of armour? To be hurt less by attacks. Making each attack less likely to hit accomplishes this. Adding block/parry/dodge rolls and damage reduction simply adds more rolls and calculations to something, but will...

4e increased my DM prep time...

The 4e books have stuff the 1e books and 3e books didn't. The 1e books and 3e books have stuff the 4e books didn't. One area where 4e really shines is that instead of just giving you a goblin monster as a level 1 warrior and expecting you to level it up using PC classes (which has the...

    The Truth About 4th Edition.

Well, what do you do instead? Just have people say vaguely where they are and every so often ask a person at DM whim what they want to do next? Because that sounds confusing as heck. There's a good reason we had paper maps in 2nd ed, which turned into grids in 3e. They prevent every combat from...

    New WHFRP3e prospective GM, help!

If they were any good at fighting and could stop backstabbing each other for five minutes.

When you kill your monsters do you kill the boss one last?

Strikers should never attack minions unless the striker can do area attacks. With minions out of the way, I'd probably say to kill the weaker monsters first. An elite monster often does twice the damage of a normal, and a solo often does about three times the damage, but they're both more than...

PHB3 Excerpts: what are you hankering for?

Yeah, but given that the spellcasting characters in D&D already create pretty much any effect you can imagine in fantasy, what's left for psionics to do? Hearing "psionics" would make me think of mind control, but with illusions and domination effects already in the game, what could you do? You...

D&D 4E Is 22 points the best point buy for 4e?

Likewise. I dunno, I find that putting a 20 in your primary attack stat makes such a lot of sense that it sort of makes every character into a one-trick pony. I prefer to see players spread the stats out a bit more, and not feel like they gimped themselves by putting an 18 into strength instead...

What to do when it's not your turn

I would've thought adding a possible 4 or so more actions to a player's turn, all of which require input from players whose turn it isn't would mean it would take even longer before your turn came up again.

What happens when the party is not only short on numbers, but diversity as well?

Make them the assassination squad, sneaking in and attacking enemy leaders while the real war wages, like World War 2 commandoes. You can even shake it up and have the goal of many encounters to eliminate only one enemy (the leader, naturally) in three rounds or so and escape before his guards...

Is DDI Worthwhile in Your Opinion?

Well worth it to subscribe every 6 months. They would really have to go to town on an online game table program that was completely stunning to get me to subscribe constantly.
