    the worst party ever

Five controllers of any stripe. I have no idea how it was decided that controllers should have the least hitpoints AND the least damage of any class. They always seem to be a liability when I'm playing.

    Improvising Encounters - hard?

Find five equal-level brutes and give them any powers you think appropriate. Say you want pirates, grab a level 5 brute, let him climb on rigging and say YARR whenever he uses his rechargeable power, and you're there. Stick some loaded cannons around the place as well as a fuse running to the...

    Evil Campaign Advice

To respond to the OP, there's a link to a good depiction of a good Evil campaign in my sig, in comic format. Some good guidelines for an Evil campaign are: Make sure that they have lots of reasons to stick together as a party - D&D is a party-based game. If the players are constantly screwing...

    Evil Campaign Advice

What? When? I admit that they do kill people on that show, but I can't ever remember Mal accepting a hit job, or assassinating anyone. Or if you're counting the time they stormed the space station, that was to get their tortured friends out. I'd say that all the killing done by the crew in...

    Standard DM behavior?

I usually allow the PCs the chance to find what they're after as far as magic items are concerned if they're in a large population centre. Stuff they loot from enemies or dungeons is thoroughly under my control - I often use this to shore up any parts of the party that don't seem to be as good...

Power Cards - Do you use them?

One hundred percent yes. It's so easy having all your options just laid out in front of you. It also eliminates any rulebook flipping - I remember in 3e every spellcaster needed a copy of the PHB and MM (summons and polymorph, you know) open pretty much constantly. Now you've just got your dozen...

DM in way over my head

Doesn't Kobold Hall end with a black dragon that kills everyone? That'd turn anyone off D&D.

    4E Class Survivor - Round 5

Finally, we can dump the warlock. What power source would you give him, though? Divine, maybe? A special one of his own? After all, it has to cover demons, cthulhu and fairy pacts.

    4E Class Survivor - Round 4

Bloody hell, one of the things I liked most about 4e was that if you wanted your party to have a healer, you had choices that weren't "this guy who casts divine magic" and "this OTHER guy who casts slightly different divine magic". Meanwhile you guys seem to want to return to the bad old days...

Supernatural Role Playing Game (Help & Discuss)

I always thought that Supernatural would be best run in World of Darkness. After all, the show is basically "Hunter: The TV Series".

    4E Class Survivor - Round 3

Voted warlock for being generally bad at what it does. It's a striker that doesn't do much damage. Like a bike that can't go faster than 4 mph.

Justifying high level 'guards', 'pirates', 'soldiers', 'assassins', etc.

Yes. It stinks to miss a guy every time you attack him, which is what you'd get if you ran them as 18th level minions. It would also mean anyone who has an "auto-damage" aura, like fighters do, can mow through them like they were nothing. If you make one a level 1 solo, people can attack and...

Is my DM setting us up for failure? [Minor Spoilers for Demon Queen's Enclave]

Well, just start blowing all your dailies every single fight and resting up afterwards. If the DM starts saying, "Guys, stop resting after every fight", you can say, "Well, the fights are so tough that we don't feel safe without going all-out every time."

Is my DM setting us up for failure? [Minor Spoilers for Demon Queen's Enclave]

Yeah, but if they're fighting encounters built for 5 PCs, they can probably use an extra level or two to make up for the missing man.

Can you make sense of my weather chart?

Very cool. If it wasn't tied to your setting, I'd steal it right away. As it is, I'll just have to settle for emulating it instead. I never tend to bother with weather outside of "dramatic storm" in my game - a light drizzle or strong wind would spice things up a bit.

Which published Wizards 4e adventures have you played?

I played Keep on the Shadowfell, and I hated that it was just fight fight fight fight. Having had the opportunity to look at a few of the other modules, I see they're not really much different - a big dungeon with lots of combat encounters in it. I prefer more plot for the amount of combat...

    Ignoring the 4e DMG

Well, there're guys out there who DM with only the PHB and just adapt the classes in there to make monsters. MM makes monsters easier, DMG is a good read on the loo when you're thinking of ideas for your game next week.

Setting with humans only (that is, all races as humans)

Depends, really. I usually find that there's at least one person who, when characters are being created, has no clear idea what they want to play and are happy to "make whatever the party needs". Get that guy to be your Deva. On the other hand, if everyone knows what they want to play, just...

    House Ruling 4E? How common

I agree with making minions a bit tougher - I count them as having a quarter of the HP of a normal monster. To make it easier to track their HP, I write it down like a normal monster, so I might have: Bugbear1: 35 Bugbear2: 35 BugbearMinions (9): 35 At the start of the battle. As minions get...

    Ignoring the 4e DMG

Well, if it works for you, that's great. I must say, I think ten combat encounters per level is too much - the published modules are just fight after fight after fight. The amount of plot for an entire Wizards module I would fit into about half a dozen combat encounters and some inbetween stuff...
