    Playing Evil

The game in my sig certainly worked well. I think I'd give you a few pointers on how to run an Evil campaign: 1) Make sure the party has a really good reason for working together. Have the good guys really pressing them so if they screw each other over they're going to die. Alternatively, have...

[Folks that like 4e] What are some things from previous editions that you miss?

20 minions attack the party! Go! I don't think you can get more simple or quick than that in D&D.

[4E] How exactly did DP "fix" the Paladin?

You might also want to do something about paladins who don't have a strength power choice at certain levels.

Getting rid of ability bonuses/penalties for races

From a powergaming perspective: Do this, and dwarf fighters get even better. They have tons of non-stat bonuses to make up for having 2 less strength than their peers, and it works very well. If they can get the extra strength as well, that's definite power creep. Isn't this houserule supposed...

    DMG2 Excerpt: Companion Characters

The way I always did companion characters in 4e was to treat them as a walking daily power. They wouldn't take part in the battle really (they might duke it out with a monster off to the side somewhere) but if the players asked them to help, they could bust out a move, once per day. So a cleric...

Best of the Best - Controllers.

The more I play 4e, the more I feel that the "controller" is the weakest role a party can have. Defenders are great, leaders are great, and strikers can often be great for those "you did how much damage?!" moments, but controllers just don't seem as useful as the other roles. Defenders and...

    Best Quality in a GM

Preparation. It's got to be preparation. I really don't mind a railroaded adventure ("Hey, you guys hear about this haunted keep full of monsters that come out and raid the local towns" - sign me up!), I definitely do mind an adventure that doesn't have anywhere to go. I played with this one GM...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

Yeah, I don't really like the "intimidate bloodied opponent into surrendering" mechanic, because it's really easy to get a ton of bonuses in skills. Perhaps if the intimidate mechanic was rebalanced to take into account that anyone who really wants to can get massive bonuses to it (basically...

    Is 3.0 Playable?

If I was running 3.0, I'd make it clear that the campaign wasn't going to exceed level 12 or so. The game doesn't balance too well above that level, and running it becomes a bit of a chore for the DM.

PHB Book Layout - Good or No so Good

Well, it's certainly a lot better to have a PHB you barely need to look at (I think magic items and character generation is all we use ours for) than every spellcaster needing to have a copy of the PHB open on their lap for the entirety of the game. In reference to the thread title, when did...

Unhappy with my fighter build. Please tell me where I am wrong.

With some of their daily stances like the ones that do 1[W] damage to anyone who starts next to them, they can do a damn fine impression of one, though. Especially if you get a waraxe or two hander.

Unhappy with my fighter build. Please tell me where I am wrong.

This isn't exactly what you asked, but one of the paladin at-wills, Valourous Strike, gives +1 to hit for every adjacent enemy to you. Great for your concept. Really, though, the difference between a D8 and a D10 for damage is pretty inconsequential, and as others have said, if you care so...

Questions for those who never game

1: When university finished me and my gaming buddies all moved to different parts of the country and got jobs, and meeting up once a week became impossible. Playing online seems to suck horribly, or we'd do that. I've tried to find a D&D group round my way, but they were all horrible disgusting...

Forked thread: Meta portion of the "Class Acts" bard thread

I don't have a DDI subscription but I still like to read these threads so I can glean some of the content for free. I'll probably subscribe sometime, and these threads make that more likely each time they come out.

Paranoia xp service pack 1 question

I've wanted to run Paranoia for a long time, actually. I've played in games that have been very well DMed, and I was wondering - are there any tips you old-timers have for a new DM? I've DMed tons of D&D since 2nd ed, and a smattering of other systems along the way. Anything I should keep in...

    4E, as an anti-4E guy ...

I've gotta say, Keep on the Shadowfell is a pretty bad adventure. It's just fight-fight-fight-fight-fight. That'll give pretty much anyone a bad impression of 4e - there's just too much fighting and not enough plot. But that's what you'll get if you run pre-written modules. I prefer running my...

House rule, perhaps? Solo can't have more than a -5 to hit, maybe?
