What's wrong with scaling (and levels, bonuses, advancement, etc)?

Yeah, I could see defenses and attack bonuses staying more-or-less the same throughout the game, but damage and hitpoints (which I'd like to be renamed to "defense points") scaling up. So your level 30 guy can still take on hordes of orcs because it'll take 'em a while to get through his 250...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

One thing I would like to see them drop is the 3-18 scale for stats. It makes little sense having say, strength 15, from you have to extrapolate that you have +2 strength. Why not just have "Strength 2"? I understand that it's a sacred cow, but we can probably ditch it by now.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 DM Considering 4E

I did find the Heal spell to be a big offender in 3.5e - 150 HP for a single standard action basically means that monsters now have to do 150 HP or more per round in order to be a real threat. Buffs were dreadful, as well - who thought it'd be a good idea to have to track upwards of ten buff...

DMs: Have you ever done this?

One of my favourite DM tricks to save everybody time during investigation-type scenes is to say things like, "Okay, you think you've found pretty much everything there is to find in this place" or "You get the feeling that you're going down a dead end with this lead". A little rail-roady, but...

PCs who don't seem to want to meet

If you're looking for a one-shot way to put a party together that's worked for me, try this: Make the players siblings! It works so well! The characters have a good reason for knowing each other and working together. If someone does something stupid or evil then it's less, "Why am I working...

    Poll: Favored class & why?

I love playing a fighter because I like being the one to take direct action - let others worry about sneaking around in the shadows, or skulk around at the back of the party because they're too weedy to take a blow, I want to kick that door down and face things head on!

After Three Years... we Finished the Campaign

That's an interesting statement - what does an animal have to have in order to qualify as having a mind? Presumably people do - do horses? How about dogs? I must say, I'd probably have been surprised if I couldn't use mind-affecting spells on a scorpion, giant or otherwise. I'm in a similar...

    Bring back alignments?

Every single player in my campaign has chosen the not-alignment - unaligned. They all like not being straight-jacketed by the alignment system. If you were going to actually think about how they play, they all play in the good to neutral range anyway. I like never having to hear, "You...

    Solo Characters

I would've thought Fighter would be a good choice for this - they get a lot of self-heal powers, and can dish it out if built correctly (two-handed, two-sword, maybe even the invigorating fighter). To be honest, though, 4e isn't built for a solo campaign - the classes are designed to be played...

D&D 4E Things I really like about 4e (and how they could be better)

Well, it's more that the dailies tend to do game-breaking stuff when they can be used every single encounter. In multi-combat sessions you can at least go, "Well, at least they won't have *incredibly destructive power X* next encounter". Not so in my campaign.

D&D 4E Things I really like about 4e (and how they could be better)

Oh, and I wish they'd release TRAP VAULT - 150 pages of nothing but traps. I want to see traps you can use as part of an encounter, traps that ARE an encounter, traps with lots of ways of solving them, all sorts of traps! The 20 or so there are in the game now are a bit thin for such an iconic...

D&D 4E Things I really like about 4e (and how they could be better)

I have a bit of an issue with milestones and daily powers that recharge only after you've had a fight - my adventures often only have one or two combat encounters in them! My players wouldn't get to use dailies very often. I'd like to see an edition of D&D where it didn't really matter how many...

Published Adventures: Full Monster Stats or Book References?

Yeah, in a lot of ways it's a shame that the MM1 monsters were so bad. They basically make the original 4e published adventures obsolete. Of course, the original adventures were crap, so it's just another nail in the coffin.

Planes Above, sucks to be good.

I'll take, "The afterlife is an uncertain place for everyone" over, "Good guys get something nice, guaranteed, bad guys get shafted, guaranteed". It used to be a complete no-brainer, morally. Even if you were evil at heart, anyone with any intelligence would do their best to be good just from...

D&D 4E [4E Players, mainly] Ever thought of defecting to Pathfinder?

To answer the original question - no. As far as I'm concerned, Pathfinder is just a rip-off of 3e with "Bob's D&D houserules" website appended onto it. I can houserule the game myself if I wanted to go back to 3.5e.

D&D 4E Convince me that 4e is worth my time

Wow, what an arrogant thread title. Convince me that it's worth my time to explain to you why 4e is worth your time.

    Another solid article - Strongholds

That's only if you take a "prison break" to be a standard action. Real prison breaks take weeks of planning. Would your characters be willing to spend 60 weeks mouldering in jail so they can take 20?

    Thief + to hit crazy?

The real trouble with thieves and rogues isn't their damage or hitting power, it's the fact that they wear leathers and have low hitpoints and insist on getting stuck into the middle of combat. After all, when you're flanking someone, you're halfway toward being flanked yourself.

    Whatever Happened to Power Cards?

I do like power cards better than not having power cards, but sometimes I wish I could see the table beneath the racks of stuff my players have cards for now.
