    Why no low?

I wouldn't really mind things being standardised - Gamma World does a fair bit of this by making sure that you always have a decent attack stat. Basically a character should be playable within the framework of the game. If this means taking away a couple of options that only really serve to...

Sneak Attack--Help me stop my DM from banishing it!

Guard drakes are ridiculous monsters. +6 damage for being near a friend? In a game where enemies tend to come in packs of five or greater? At level two?! If you want a TPK, just stick a group of five guard drakes together, and presto.

Monsters: Controller vs Artillery. Which is which?

To be honest, player classes suffer from this as well. I've looked in vain for something that controllers can do that other classes can't. The only thing I could find in the original PHB was, "Controllers can do at-will area damage". But when the sorcerer was released, that went out the window...

Sleep is the most worthless spell

At the end of the day, it's still only a level one spell. Why should it defeat an entire encounter on its own? If it really bugs you that much, make a level 30 daily (it'd still be overpowered, but whatever) with the effect "Win one encounter", and rename the actual sleep spell to Drowsiness...

Liber fanatica #7 out today for WFRP..and flight of writers with game edition changes

I think the trouble with 3e is that people were expecting to get 2e with some changes, and instead got Experimental Roleplay System X-5000. There's definitely such a thing as changing too much in an edition, and I think they went a bit too far. The other problem is the giant price barrier to...

    WotBS 4E compiled WotBS

Just to drop my oar in here - there's a real shortage of good 4e modules out there (the official ones tend to be fight-fight-fight-fight x20 then a tiny bit of plot) and it'd be a shame for you guys not to make another. I find making encounters in 4e a breeze as well, so you've probably done...

    Essentials (Comments)

Those demonstrations are totally awesome and everyone should see them. I remember the first time I went to the Armouries, they had actual knights actually jousting, breaking actual lances on each other. It was fantastic to watch. Don't worry, just get one of those breastplates with the...

Favorite Change in any D&D edition

Everyone houseruled initiative to the 3rd ed thing anyway. Same as the AC-against-different-weapon-types table everyone ignored.

The Dungeons & Dragons Virtual Table

You are confused. If it was 1d it'd be basically invisible.

Figuring Out Initiative For Custom Traps

I just use half the level of my party for the initiative bonus.

Monsters that are a Waste of Pages

I'm a really experienced GM and have run basically every monster under the sun, and halfway through re-reading the Berbalang and still not having the faintest clue how it's meant to be run (is it basically four goblins who share hitpoints or something? I haven't read the bugger since 4e was...

Noob DM needs additional help :) (adjusting difficulty)

You could cheekily fudge your damage rolls. Wince noticeably and go "Oof!" every time you roll damage against him. Then add 15 to the total. I'm also a fan of, "He calls a bolt of pure darkness from the void. It slams into you, doing *character's bloodied value* damage!" as an opening move.

    D&D 4E Help me understand 4e

Average AC on a monster at level 3 is 17. This character has +7 to hit. This character does not need a 15 to hit average foes of her level. It's not what I'd call "optimised", but it should do fine.

    Dwarven Weapon Training... really?

Yeah, this was me! Everyone shouted me down though. Dwarven supremacy!

Ampersand for November - Incl preview of Weaponmaster fighter

Huh? I thought one of the design decisions for essentials - and one of their more odious panderings to the 4e-haters - was that martial characters would only have at-wills and encounters, leaving the dailies to those who are worthy of their use - the almighty magic-users. Now we've got a...

    Slayer build sillyness

I found that while fighters tended to keep up in damage with the strikers (especially when you start using Sweeping Blow and Come and Get It in the same round to make effectively about 10 attacks) in Heroic tier, by Paragon they really started to lag. The fighter'll hit for about 17 damage, then...

    Essentials: An end to MADness?

What? No it wouldn't. If some classes require more high stats than others, your method still has those classes as less desirable. Your method actually makes it worse, as you're guaranteed only one high stat. Your halfling rogue's rolls are pretty irrelevant if he can still have a 16 dex. MAD is...

    Another feat tax?

I'd far rather see feats that increase attacks, damage, defenses and hitpoints be simply built in to all characters by default. You could reduce the number of feats given to compensate for the gain in power level.

    Look Ma- Rules Updates!

Were rogues so underpowered before that they needed to get rapier proficiency for free as well as being able to sneak attack multiple times in a round? On another note, dwarfs were already almost entirely built around compensating for being the only "warrior race" that DOESN'T get a strength...
