Unless you want to design the setting such that those elements are diegetic, of course.

D&D 5E (2014) Character Creation- How to Apply Auction Techniques

At its core, you have to have a group that finds making someone play a 9 Con fighter funny, and that any player who got that character would laugh and enjoy it. I have tables that definitely lean that way, and others that don’t. You have to know your audience.

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

The goal would be whatever sounds more fun to you as a player.

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

Thought puzzle. Assume you're making characters at 1st level, 3d6 6 times, rearrange to taste. Before you roll stats, would you rather: A) Instead get to roll 5d6 drop 2 for each stat. B) Roll normally, but also receive a rare or very rare magic item, rolled from a 1d100 table with no...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Gladiator: The Narrative Dissonance

I think this is a classic 3e-ism that a lot of players haven't fully done a reset of in their narratives. Definitely not uncommon if you played a lot of 3e; to this day I have several DMs that still call for Listen checks and Knowledge(arcana) checks.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Gladiator: The Narrative Dissonance

For sure. I’ve been leaning into LitRPG and progression fantasy tropes in my D&D games over the last 5 years or so. My overarching D&D multiverse has thousands of classes, most of which can be acquired through a combination of classes levels, feats, and special narrative achievements, which...

Because the players know better than to make the game silly. If they can't do that, then play a game where the DM can force compliance because they're the final authority. And for PbtA games, it's the DM and the players.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Gladiator: The Narrative Dissonance

I don't use the MM much, and for humanoids I usually do a quick stat up of monsters on the fly. For a 4 person 7th level party, I'd probably do 3 of these guys (blending some barb, rogue, and fighter abilities) and a ranged specialist, borrowing some rogue and monk abilities. Gladiator 7 HD...

Wizards of the Coast Reveals Revised Eberron Species Details

When I run Eberron (and most other cosmopolitan D&D settings), I assume that most individuals descend from multiple races. The racial/ancestry mechanics simply represent a combination of common phenotypes and cultural inheritances that crop up. Your bog-standard Khorvairan "human" is going to...

    Why do the Actors Matter?

I feel like it depends on the character. Like, for a project based on comics, or books, than the character came first, and you're just looking for an actor to help display the attributes already known about that character, and possibly add your own distinct twist and flavor to the portrayal...

This is basically one of the many ways the 5e designers indicate they don’t want the game to be based around resource husbandry, but understand they have to keep it because tradition.

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Page Count, Contents Revealed

The book is only 112 pages. They don’t have the room to shift anything. :) And for me personally, the real Eberron (as much as such a concept matters) is what’s on Keith’s blog, not what WotC publishes.

You can't spell "Ph.D." without "HP".

100%. I do run some games with a more sim agenda, and they have strict diegetic class identities. But even in those games, I have systems in place to accomodate the host of NPCs who have some kind of strong ability or abilities but don't have the corresponding supernatural resilience of high HPs.

For sure; 99% of players are simply not going to care about the larger philosophical issues.

I can see this working for something like the WFRP career system, but not for the relatively intransigent D&D class system. The core issue is that real people don't progress linearly, learning exactly the same set of skills in the exact same order. You can make it work by making each "class"...

What are you reading in 2025?

Considering how constantly inundated kids are with visual and aural distractions from the various screens available, any medium that can get them to ingest text for a period of time more than a few seconds is worthwhile.

Help me brainstorm a grounded military mecha campaign set in the year 2050

Random thoughts. 1) I'd probably push the time frame out to somewhere between 2080-2100. I don't think you'd see such a large increase in mechanical capability outside of possibly a Singularity type event. Giving a little more time frame padding would allow for more governmental collapse...
