Is using a familiar in combat to grant advantage a common tactic?

It's called a bloodwing in my game. :uhoh: Aside: I keep expecting someone will play a beastmaster with a pet thresher just to piss me off. I hate threshers.

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Really. That took no amount of wanting to read it that way. Indeed, I want to read it like you're saying how things work in your game, but I have to ignore what you're actually saying to get there. Lookat what he said and how you replied: Him: Traps don't have neon signs saying "I'm trapped"...

    How many dragons?

I've just added the idea to my to-do list, with this note: "One of these dragons - or a family of them - ought to be called Brashnir II - after the Enworlder who inspired the idea."

D&D 5E (2014) Kickstarter: Humblewood Campaign Setting, featuring cute birds saving their forest

40 & 50 year old nerds have lots of money to spend is my guess.

How often is counterspell used in your games?

I wouldn't be surprised. In the game where I'm playing we face much tougher foes than the ones I throw at the players when in DMing - and I've had to homebrew lots of low CR devils, demons and other critters in order to build up a useful interesting arsenal of fodder.

    How many dragons?

That is true. I just realized, though, that it might've been cool if I'd put a dragon lair on every single level of the place. Like most of them would be hidden, requiring extensive exploration of the level to find, so the players could spend their entire adventuring career as dragon hunters if...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

:hmm: While those aren't very flattering interpretations, at least they aren't the worst possible. :p

    How many dragons?

Not often enough. I try to use them more than I did in the past, but even still, there are only a half a dozen or so places in my megadungeon where I've specifically placed dragons, and the players have only actually been to one of them. I also seem to have made them too rare on my wandering...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Small heads up. You just accidentally told him about how things work in his game. I'm sure you didn't mean to, but it looks bad.

    Magical adept level 1 spell.

Eek! A spider! Stomp on it. STOMP ON IT! Ahem. We have wildly different definitions of adorable.

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

You and Oofta are far better at gleaning your e players' intentions than I am. I see ""I try to determine if he's lying" and I know you, the Enworld poster, are suggesting the method described in PH in the Insight description because this thread is all about that. But at the table, if Insight...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

That's speaking like a true murderhobo, er I mean dungeon delver. I heartily approve.

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

Perhaps this is why I'm inclined to start with "he's lying*" - since it's gonna result in bloodshed no matter how specific I get, I might as well skip the details and get to the point, so the stabbing can begin. *I'm not really inclined to start from the general and move through a series of...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

Everything you say makes sense. My post was pretty narrow and focused solely on the assumption that the player was simply trying to determine if the NPC was lying, like a lie detector does. Like, imagine the player had said to me. "I try to determine if the NPC is lying . . . " The player is...

How often is counterspell used in your games?

Yeah, I've never seen it is more than once in a single round. The closest I have seen was when it used twice in the same combat, by the same PC against the same enemy. The enemy was casting fireball both times so the rest of the party really appreciated the counterspelling.

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

I've never had my say on this topic in this thread yet, so here goes: I hate hate hate "Can I use insight?" with the heat of a thousand Satyrns :uhoh: But wait! It's not why you think. It's because I don't want my players asking for permission to act. I'm essentially fine with "I use insight."...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

I don't think that subtlety applies to the way I'm doing things. How things work on the real world is irrelevant to what I'm doing. When I'm saying the "NPC is lying" I mean it the same way as if I had said "there's a book of poetry on the shelf." It's an objective fact that I'm telling the player.

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

What about how I handle it: When the player declares he's trying to detect if the NPC is lying,* I tell him to roll an Insight check, and that if he beats the DC he learns if the NPC is lying or not. If the player beats the DC, all I need to say is "he's lying," or"he's not lying" whichever is...

How often is counterspell used in your games?

Yeah, this. It totally depends on the presence of a spellcasting enemy. When it can be used, it gets used a lot.
