Is it possible to use an object as an improvised reach weapon?

It rather depends on the item in question, and whatever the DM and players agree to. Like, if my player grabbed a coat rack and started swinging it at the zombies, I might give it reach. I definitely would give it reach of the player said hey "I grabbed this because I figured it would be a...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

This is especially fun for me when I roll a Nat 1. Even more so when I was playing the half orc in 3e. Satyrn: "I got a, uh, negative 1."

Counter spell and calling out spell levels

If I was playing in AL, I'd be seeking out DMs that are free with this sort of info.

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

Also, Max, if it doesn't quite work, but comes close, you might consider my change: Unlike the standard rules, the players have to spend hit dice to heal during a long rest, too. I let them do this after they gain back the hit dice from the long rest.

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

Page 42 of the 4e DMG contained concise advice on how to improv a threat, suggesting how much damage a trap/environment effect/etc ought to do, how to assign a saving they're and the like, based on the party's level and how dangerous you want it to be. Something like that, anyway. Residuum is a...

Aquatic creatures: Saltwater vs. Freshwater list, what if one enters the other?

Heh. Yeah. My megadungeon had a lake feed by a couple rivers of water and a river of lava. The lava boils off the water, and I figured that would result in the effective destruction of a lot of water in the dungeon, so I needed a source of new water to replenish it. My solution was to place...

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

The point of the post you quoted was to answer Numidius's question. You have to go back to my first post (where I quote Max) of this little exchange in order to see my original point: When the players are trying to snag a living skag, I find it more satisfying (and my players seem to, too) if...

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

I'm gonna quote this a second time (the first half, anyway) since I didn't address it: The players may find an excellent use for fireball in this scenario*, but if fireball and longswords could simply knock out a monster by dropping it to zero hit points then capturing a live specimen works...

GMs: Issues with Improvising During Sessions?

The social stuff. Although they aren't exactly my issue, I selected "Generating quality minor NPCs quickly" and "Dropping in an unexpected roleplay scene" because they're close enough. . . . No wonder I'm running a megadungeon sandbox right now.

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

*My own asterisking: Not that anyone should mistake a game where goblins toss exploding turtles as grenades for realistic. But you're essentially right, I'm going for a version of hardcore. I'm also running a sandbox, so if the players aren't interested in trying to capture a skag alive, they...

    I'm playing 5e. I can't answer the other question. I don't understand what you're asking.

D&D 5E (2014) Protection. Sword and board as Two weapon fighting?

But to answer the thread title's question: I've seen other DMs rule that the shield, as an improvised weapon, deals 1d4 damage ( adding your Str mod of you have the two weapon fighting style) But - and this is important! - the shield is not a light weapon, so you need the Dual Wielder feat to...

D&D 5E (2014) Protection. Sword and board as Two weapon fighting?

I don't understand what you're saying here. Are you saying you selected the Dual Wielder feat at 4th Level. Are you confusing the bonus action granted by the cavalier's Unwavering Mark feature as two weapon fighting? Are you talking about some other cavalier than the one in Xanathar's, and that...

What do you call it when...

Because most of my responses are one-liners, I'm sure I've been guilty of this. But the alternative, shortening the quote to the single line or paragraph that I'm responding to, gets viewed negatively here, too, and I would not be surprised to discover that @Dannyalcatraz has fielded reports...

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

I have found this method to be more satisfying, too. My players have taken a quest (very much in the sense of taking a quest in a video game) to retrieve live specimens of various dungeon critters. Their corpses are acceptable, but of much lesser value, both gold and XP wise. If I was using...

    Daily Income

I start by deciding what lifestyle those soldiers have. Then I decide how often they have to work. If the work the standard work week (or more) I double the cost of a daily modest lifestyle and say that's their salary. The doubling is meant to account for savings, dependents, etc. although I...

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

Batlich. Since he can beat Superlich, he can beat any lich. But seriously . . . "seriously" heh . . . I'll go with Vecna as my sentimental favorite. I hope that's not like cheering for the Bills.
